Alcazar while having a small footprint & economical diesel engine would have been ideal if its starting price was between 15-17L OTR, but Hyundai chose to go the premium route instead, perhaps a missed opportunity. |
Mahindra has tried this with the Marazzo...a 3 row affordable vehicle prices just above Ertiga and significantly lower than Innova, and is NCAP 4* too, yet struggling to score more than 300 to 400 monthly. Only thing its an MUV not SUV. Sometimes reality defies logic.
Yes, Alcazar is more of an attempt by Hyundai to cash in on the Creta popularity, but I feel Hyundai has missed a trick here. The Safari has excellent third row seat where even two adults can sit comfortably and there is no boot side practically (73 L). So the value proposition is clear... Use it for 7 adults for short/day trips, or, if going on long drives with luggage, go with 5 adults and use the extended boot space by flat bedding the 3rd row. With Alcazar, they've compromised on the leg space and head space in the 3rd row, so you cannot seat adults even for very short trips, and still the boot space at 180L is nothing worth talking about. So it will appeal only to families with kids who can be seated in 3rd rows, and cannot go on very longish trips with truck loads of luggage. The value proposition is not clear as much. Yet, the 3000 odd numbers for June show that it appears to have found favour with the masses. But it's still early days, another 3 months and it would be clear if Hyundai has found a sweet spot or not.
