Citroen has better fit and finish and a better engine, ride and handling package than Tata Punch & Nexon. If they can improve on the quality of plastics and add some missing features, they should have worthy competitors in C3, C3 Aircross. That said, with much fewer dealers, their numbers will still be much lower than Tata.

Too little, too late? Maybe, yes. Once a product is labelled cheap, it's hard to let go of the tag. Ask the Nano and Datsun. But, maybe there is still time for Citroen. They did showcase the C5 to show what they are capable of.

I am expecting the C3 Aircross V2 to come with more bells and whistles and an AT in 2024, before the sedan.

The delay to incorporate additional features is welcome news and indicates a manufacturer willing to listen to customers and stakeholders without working in a silo. Hopefully their entire model range receives these timely upgrades through 2024, including the much needed automatic transmission.

If Citroen continues this approach, there may still be hope after all.

And what does Basalt mean? Citroën didn't say so, but it's basalt, a type of volcanic rock, created from the rapid cooling of magma. Rich in iron and magnesium, it is widely used as a building material. Now, what led Citroën to choose exactly that name is something they will explain only later.

Indian market looks for value and quality and are willing to pay a slight premium. Interior means a lot for Indian cur buyers and I sincerely hope Citroën have done the homework properly now.

That's all I need to know about this product. They're indirectly implying the amount of cost cutting that is going to be present in this Basalt.

The mechanical part has no mysteries. The Basalt will come with the 1.0 turboflex engine with 130 hp and 20.4 kgfm of torque developed by Fiat and which already equips the C3 Aircross. The transmission will be the CVT simulating 7 gears, with no manual option. It could count on a top-of-the-line version with the 1.3 turbo of 185 hp and 27.5 kgfm, but then it would create problems for the C4 Cactus and its 1.6 THP of 173 hp.

The Citroën Basalt will be presented worldwide next Wednesday (27). It will go on sale first in India, still in the 2nd quarter, where it should have different engines like the 1.2 turbo. In Brazil, production is expected to start only in the last quarter of this year.

Based on the rendering above and Citroen’s past designs, this is gonna look really cool! How about a new strategy Citroen, launch an AT only top end variant with all bells and whistles and price it in the middle of competition. This will get some serious buyers in Citroen showrooms and will have higher sales conversions too. Later they can add lower variants if there’s such a demand. If the strategy clicks, relaunch the entire portfolio in the same way with added bells and whistles

The styling sure looks different and fresh, particularly from this rear three quarter angle. Well proportioned too. French cars always had a flair and this one's no exception.
The powertrain is a proven unit and, (I'm guessing), the BASALT will weigh around 1.2 tons at the kerb, so that's not much of load to lug around for a 110ps turbo, 3-pot, 1.2 litre engine. Usually French cars have a well tuned suspension and the same trait should be there in the BASALT.
If the BASALT is well specc'd and competitively priced, it can just be enough to give Citroen India its mojo back.

Isn't this similar to Maruti Grand Vitara design? For me at least I find lots of similarities with Grand Vitara. Will it succeed here in India? NO way.

Citroen Basalt:

Citroen Basalt will go on sale in the second half of 2024. Brazil launch will be later, by the end of this year.

Citroen Basalt is the third model under the C-Cubed program
Combines SUV aesthetics with sedan-like proportions
Prices will be announced in the second half of 2024

Citroen says it will announce more details about the Basalt towards the middle of the year before it goes on sale in the latter half.

The electric version will follow by January or February 2025.
