Rumour: Kia Seltos Diesel iMT to be launched in 2022

The Kia Seltos Diesel is currently available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. However, according to a recent report, Kia is likely to introduce a Diesel iMT version of the Seltos next year.

Just like the Petrol iMT, the Seltos Diesel iMT could be offered in the HTK+ trim. The 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) is basically a manual gearbox that has an automated clutch. It is said to be more convenient than regular manuals as the driver doesn't need to operate the clutch.

The diesel engine in question is the 1.5-litre unit that puts out 114 BHP and 250 Nm. The 6-speed iMT is also available with the 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 114 BHP and 144 Nm.

Kia offers the Seltos with a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine as well. This engine develops 138 BHP and 242 Nm and comes paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Hyundai and KIA have cracked the market sentiments well and are really exploiting the iMT technology on their models. When they launched the iMT on the Seltos, I was skeptical if anyone would like an AMT transmission there. But all thanks to the sunroof available, I am seeing loads of iMT variants being sold.

With that wide spread of variants, engine and transmission options, there's a car for every customer. Starting from 9 odd lakhs and going up till 19 lakhs, one can choose NA petrol, turbo petrol or turbo diesel with a choice of any kind of transmission known to us - MT, AMT, CVT, DCT or TC. Stretching too thin? Maybe.

I always wonder why Kia has not given manual transmission in top diesel variant. With almost 50:50 ratio between petrol and diesel, I'm sure there are more buyers for proper manual version with all bells and whistles of top variant. Maybe, lesser profits with that combo ? I'm not sure.

Just a case of demand and supply. Market preference has moved towards automatic and Kia has already accounted for it. That's the reason they launched the fully loaded diesel automatic within weeks of the car's launch but manual was skipped. Had there been demand, we would be seeing an extra variant now. As such, one can always cross shop for a Creta diesel manual - win for everyone
