Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Man, the shortage of chip issue is getting to unprecedented levels.

More than 7 lakh orders in pending.

Maruti has 2.5 lakhs in pending followed by Hyundai, Tata & Mahindra.

The worst affected segment is the EV segment.

Re: Semiconductor chip shortage hits car production in India

I booked my S-Presso on 31-Oct-2021, one of the cheapest cars available today and got 4-6 weeks waiting. The 6 weeks are over but the SA says he is trying to get info and doesn't have definite answer on when it will be allotted. This is first car for us so wife is impatient.
I am guessing my car may not even be a priority due to be being A segment and maruti may be prioritizing more expensive models.

Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Just to add on bit more on my earlier point that this goes beyond Mahindra, I was looking at cumulative data and seems like it's full on crisis mode for auto industry and customers.

Some other numbers -

1. India has whopping 7 Lakh Pending delivery :

2. Auto industry global loss

Car makers to lose $210 billion !

3. India - 40K-45K Per month cancellation

Car cancellation are at all time high at 40K-45K per month

Wow! I booked a WagonR back in mid October and still no sign of it and doesn't seem it will be coming this month either.
They received some manual models this month but as per the SA, it is like a trickle and currently AGS WagonR models are not being dispatched.
Wrong time that I booked a car mainly because our existing car, a 2005 Swift needs a good service which I am avoiding and hopefully doesn't breakdown. Not to mention the value of it dropping.

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Semiconductor- How are companies handing it ?

Our cars are becoming modern and that are also making them increasing dependant on chips.

Apologies for bad handwriting but here I tried to illustrate how everything is affected, does not cover all but few -

Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery-download_739415_pixels.png

Car makers are applying few strategies to handle this -

1. Prioritise which models to make
They are facing hard decision to focus more on rolling out cars which has more demand and traction, but it's easier said than done, too complex to divert Inventory .

2. Drop features
Remember news about Tesla dropping wireless charger ? Mahindra coming with AX7 Smart variant, Hyundai dropping media player calling it new SX executive variant, these are all part of optimising chip usage.

3. Build-Shy method
Car makers are continuing to build vehicles without the chips they needed. These just sits in company yard. While this allows them to keep unit running, It also creates inventory.

Mahindra had 8K units of XUV 700 lying in company stock yard due to same.

Even GM had 10K SUV's lying in parking lot - https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/08...central-texas/

May be those who are willing to allow others to move ahead of them in the queue will be rewarded with a free upgrade?

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

I went with the Renault Kiger partially because I needed a new one pronto, my old Xcent was not cutting it for the completely broken roads I had to frequent. They were able to fulfil my order within a couple of weeks.

I really hope that this lets up soon, can't imagine having to wait a month let alone 6 or 12!

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

I am lucky definitely.

Booked altroz in October and got it delivered in October, in 20 days.

Booked celerio in December and got it delivered it in December, in 15 days.

Hope others get their cars delivered soon too.

A friend booked a Seltos IVT on my advise a week ago and has been promised delivery on 1st Jan. She was flexible on the variant and colour.

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

See, this is why used cars are probably becoming more expensive as well. There's an exponentially rising demand for sparingly used cars, mainly because new cars take so long to be delivered.

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Given this situation, are freebies / discounts being offered when booking new cars?
Or have the offers dried up completely?

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Would the dealers be even required to give any discounts or freebies? There's not much point, is there? They already have a long queue waiting, so they might even cut down on freebies and discounts now, that would make more business sense to them.

Re: Over 7 lakh Indian car buyers waiting to take delivery

Typical car dispatches in 2021 has been around 2-2.5 lacs per month. So if all manufacturers stop taking new orders today, then it will take around 3 months to clear this backlog.
Clearly it’s a sellers market right now. Won’t be surprised if some models see further price increase over next few months.
