New Hybrid Kijang spotted in Indonesia?

Spy images of the next-generation Toyota Innova have surfaced online. The test mule is said to have been spotted in Thailand.



On the outside, we can expect to see a number of visual changes, including a bold new front fascia with LED headlights, while the rear could get a pair of striking LED taillights. The alloy wheels seen on this test mule are much larger than those offered in India.

The next-gen Innova (codenamed: Project 560B) is rumoured to switch to a front-wheel-drive layout. It is also said that Toyota might offer its popular MPV with petrol and petrol-hybrid powertrains, while the diesel unit is likely to be discontinued.

At present, the Innova Crysta comes with two engine options. It includes a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol producing 164 BHP and 245 Nm and a 2.4-litre diesel with 148 BHP and 360 Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

Welcome move for Toyota India, we had a scoop already regarding some retooling in Toyota Karnataka factory right? Gives a lot of previous gen Highlander vibes too. Looks like Toyota switched to monocoque architecture for good reasons. Lot of changes means Toyota will charge a hefty premium !

I believe Toyota would be selling this alongside the current generation Innova, because otherwise it would be losing all the commercial operator numbers that still form a huge chunk of its overall sales figures. The rumoured switch to FWD layout (suggesting a monocoque base) coupled with the lack of the workhorse diesel option means it would no longer be perceived as economical and abuse-friendly as the Innovas that fleet operators swear by. This trend of deleting the diesel options in large, heavy cars is really worrisome from an ownership cost perspective. Not that fuel economy is a major concern at that price point; but the torquey nature of big turbodiesels is very desirable in that segment of vehicles. After the Tiguan, Kodiaq, Duster and its derivatives, now the Innova would soon be a gas guzzling behemoth.

Lots of changes or not, trust Toyota to arrogantly continue pushing the price envelope for its cash cows. With the advent of the petrol-hybrid powertrain, I suspect they're trying to take the fight to the Kia Carnival territory.

I maybe wrong here, but to me the above pic looks like a lowered crysta on kluger wheels hidden under some fake panels.
The 2nd row window , b&c pillars and the rear bumper gives it away.
Notice how eerily similar the 2nd row window looks in the pic below with that of the supposed B560.

560B is a different project to be positioned below the Innova.

This is going to be TNGA (probably TNGA 'B') platform. This development will also now give rise to the upcoming Hilux & Fortuner Generations & those test mules should be out soon.

Hence the upcoming Innova can't be a FWD as said in the opening post and should continue the robust ladder frame chassis / architecture

I believe the current confusion comes from the Indonesian government leak of a 'Kijang hybrid'. They may just want to piggyback on the 'Kijang- National car' brand for the latest hybrid vehicle. So the medias assumed that it is the next gen Kijang Innova. Add to that, the new gen Avanza/Veloz going monocoque/FWD, all the medias went on parroting that the Innova is also ditching BoF/RWD.

Add the 560B MPV for India, and the media in Indonesia/Malaysia came up with the present assumption of Kijang hybrid= next gen Innova= 560B MPV= no diesel for IMV.

As you said, the 560B is to be slotted below the Innova. The next gen Noah/Voxy has been launched in ASEAN market with hybrid powertrains. So there is no need for the next gen Innova to ditch the IMV platform. The new hybrid MPV could be called the Kijang xxxxx, while the Innova would continue as the Kijang Innova in Indonesia. Toyota is no stranger to splitting up and using strong brand names or new models piggybacking on existing brand names.

Everytime there's a facelift on the Innova , it moves a segment upwards.
If this is to continue for this facelift as well, then all the best to Toyota.
Right now the top end Crysta AT is almost 30 lakhs on road, which was once the territory of the Fortuner.

With Innova prices on the rise ever since the Crysta was launched, I hope the next gen Innova top end trim has second row captain seats with calf support like the Kia Carnival Limo trim.

I don't think Toyota has a lot of room to raise prices further when its already approx. 30L OTR for the top variant. I hope they learn from the Carnival's pricing that the mid 30s pricing is tough even if you have a well loaded car.

Also, the new gen Carnival will also be here by next year.

Since the Innova Crysta was introduced in 2016 and 5 years older now; it was an expected move by Toyota to bring next gen/improved version of their best seller in Indian market.

Personally I don't think Toyota will discontinue the diesel engine option from Indian automobile market at least for few years since there will be considerable decrease in the sales chart. Also they will not decrease / have competent pricing either; even if they choose petrol engines. This can be a risky tactics for the them. Company must be having brain storming on this issue.

I found the diesel engine of Innova Crysta very useful and having enough power and torque. You never feel out of power while driving. Only thing I missed was the 6th gear.

It will be interesting to watch this space and further developments with Indian market perspective.

Prices have moved but Innova is still competing in same segment as the old Innova i.e D1 segment sedans. The Octavia is well over 30L now. Difference is there have been plenty more options and cheaper smaller 7 seater options too.

There is also a rumor that next-generation 4Runner, Fortuner, Hilux, and Tacoma will share platforms. It is kind of a hard to believe rumor though. Because It will almost be like Toyota going back to a scene that existed 2 decades back. After diverging everything from Hilux in the 90s, now they are reuniting everything back to Hilux and Hilux Surf.

BTW, TNGA B name is already taken I think. They use it for the TNGA variation for small cars.
