MG Astor gets new EX variants with fewer safety features

MG Motor India has launched four new EX variants based on existing trims. The new variants get fewer safety features and are priced below the regular variants.

The Astor EX variants miss out on features like ESC, traction control, hill hold control and hill descent control. The Sharp EX trim does not get Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert features.

The MG Astor EX trims are only available with the 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine makes 108 BHP and 144 Nm.

The regular variants of the SUV are also available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an 8-speed CVT and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

MG Astor EX variant-wise ex-showroom prices:

  • Style EX – Rs. 10.22 lakh
  • Super EX – Rs. 11.90 lakh
  • Smart EX – Rs. 13.52 lakh
  • Sharp EX – Rs. 14.46 lakh

Is Astor not doing as good as MG expected?. Also, it would have made sense if they launched an affordable automatic varient since more buyers are interested only in autos these days

It seems the reason to add these trims is to tackle the semiconductor shortage that MG is facing. A lot of these features (while super-important in a modern vehicle for safety), understandably need specialized chips. This might actually increase the sales number for Astor as the people who want to do without these features can get their vehicles more quickly.
If only MG was open to providing kits that can be retro-fitted for things like ESC, and hill hold control, it would have been great. These are absolutely essential features to have in 2022.

Other than blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert, I don't think the rest are important. Especially for a FWD car with less than 200hp. Why does a non 4wd car even need hill descent control anyway?

The difference isn't much. I wonder who will voluntarily opt for these versions.

I guess, dealers will ask customers to opt for the EX variants for a faster delivery.

Re: MG Astor gets new EX variants with fewer safety features

I hope this is temporary variant due to the chip shortage. Removing important safety features like ESP was not expected.

With more OEM's moving to standard ESP in this segment and with both the updated GNCAP and Bharat NCAP requiring ESP on all variants for a 4/5 star rating this is a bit of a surprise.

After the deletions made, MG could have priced the Astor from 9.99 lakh to attract people towards the car and to undercut its rivals. And the top end should have also be rejigged to 16.99 lakh to make it a super VFM car for the price. MG missed another great opportunity

Re: MG Astor gets new EX variants with fewer safety features

I am looking to close on the Astor sharp 1.5 MT but they only have stock in Sharp EX in my choice of color - black. It is available in Grey color though.

The EX misses out on features like ESC, traction control, hill hold control and hill descent control. It also does not get Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert features. The salesperson confirmed that the EX does have ABS & brake assist etc which is essentially similar to ESC according to him.

Would like to get bhpians views on the same?
The price delta of 13k is negligible and doesn't affect our decision to still want the Sharp obviously!

Don't skip on safety features just for the sake of color.
The things which you are getting for those 13K are definitely worth more than that.
Either you wait or go with available color but don't downgrade to EX variant.

Edit: Btw ABS+Brake Assist is not same as ESC.

Agreed. Have closed on the Sharp 1.5 in Black only at 25k delta to the EX, should be delivered within a week.
