But with a transport network like London's who would want to drive in the city! But dont even wish this for any of our cities now. Kolkata for one has a horrible public transport scene, although on the roads looking at the number of options one may start to think otherwise. Take a 20km ride, you will know what I mean. (Just for example my office commute takes 35min by car, comparing to 1hour 20 mins by bus, which does not pick me up from anyway near my home and does not drop me in front of my office)
Kinetic Engineering has won the order for supplying gearboxes for the 1 lac rupee car.
Interestingly, they will be supplying variomatic
as well as manual gearboxes for the car. Earlier reports used to talk only about variomatic transmission.
Here's the Kinetic order story:
Kinetic to make gearboxes for Rs 1 lakh Tata car
Last I heard Avtec Ltd were making gear boxes for the car.
I wonder if it will be a motorcyle style gearbox without the H pattern
Kinetic in addition to making Bikes and scooters are a OEM for many companies worldwide including Cagiva . Also Kinetic did have an idea of introducing a Quadracycle kind of Car with technology from a French Quadracycle maker Axiam. That car did boast of an CVT so Kinetic does have the technology to atleast make on that could take 20 Bhp ( the power the Kinetic City Car was making) .
I sure hope that Tata Motors can ensure that Kinetic produces quality transmission systems. Kinetic is one company that has the lowest quality standards in India. Tata would do well to see that their car does not get branded as a poor quality product as was the case with Indica. Perceptions once formed, are extremely difficult to change.
just got an article of Indian express on my email.

This launch ofcourse was the talk of the day at cafetaria, lunch and even at pan shops.
One of my friend said, now we have the car which we can buy for 1-1.5 lacs, but the cost of parking lots in apartments is increasing and the price is more than this car these days! lol:

Apparently talk of the world at the moment. My German colleague asked me a few minutes back about Nano and requested some interior pics as he could find only outside pics from the German dailies.
I gave couple of good interior photos from this thread and he started looking for the SatNav in central console :Frustrati
[I just ignored him, that bloke drives a porsche and audi-A6 and has no idea about cheap cars]
Looks like a global break-through which every one of us can be proud of. Thanks tata.:thumbs up
tHINK we shouldnt be soo feeble minded. The car looks good for its price and its definitely worth the price. Tata should be commended for his great effort for making this happen.
Everyone should realise that road doesnt belong for the rich and high class people.
Yes it is surely the world is talking about this,
I got this from a Gadget blog which says
While many around the globe have their eyes fixated on the events going down in Las Vegas
this week, the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, India is managing to steal at least a hint of the limelight. Announced today, Tata Motors' $2,500 "
1-Lakh" car will actually see production in India later this year, and it has affectionately been dubbed the NANO.
and I saw the news in couple of channels in UK.
Tata got a micro site
Tata 'NANO' - The People's Car from Tata Motors Note from moderator: Kindly avoid using font colour tags
Just read a statement made by THE MAN himself
" Since we started the project four years there has been a steep increase in input cost , but a promise is a promise "
Another statement about Tata which I would like to mention at this point
" Business cycles may change but class is forever ! "
