The special edition X6 is one of several ‘50 Jahre M Edition’ models that have been introduced in the recent past. The SUV gets a gloss black illuminated kidney grille with the classic ‘BMW Motorsport logo’, 20-inch M alloy wheels, M Sport brake callipers and a sporty front apron with enlarged air intakes and side sills.

Inside, the X6 50 Jahre M Edition comes equipped with a 4-zone automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon sound system and sports seats as standard. The SUV also gets features like temperature-controlled cup holders, wireless charging and a panoramic sunroof.

One of the best things to happen is the use of the newer - Sensafin (vegan leather). I have seen this upholstery on the iX, and it looks very posh.

Unfortunately, BMW India has got low single-digit numbers, and all have been sold out. But this surely suggests the direction in which they are moving. With many LCI planned for 2023, the use of such leather will be a welcome change. The usual cheap ones look so out of place for cars costing a crore.

I am just curious, typically Indian variants are well kitted due to lack of customisation options. Whatever standard variants they sell, they are fairly well optioned. Seat material, however, feels very basic. Never understood why. One thing is for sure though, high end leather seats don’t age well in India unless the owners are OCD. Could this be the reason (tropical weather and lack of TLC from typical owners) for giving cheap looking seats?

You will be more surprised to know that in most of the cars configured for the stock by the dealerships or company officials (CBU), little attention is paid to the material/ colour and, worst of all, No Seat Ventilation. I have seen some Porsches with over 25 Lac loadings but missing a small upgrade to better leather and ventilated seats. Same is true for cars like X5M or M5 configured by the company.

On the CKD, I think that culture is followed, most dealers will tell that only I am the one who needs such a thing, but this can't be true. If a company like Maruti/ Toyota can offer seat cooling on basic models, why does BMW do not give seat cooling on any of the CKD models (X7 being an exception) And, the leather they use is such a horrible quality.

That is partially correct, most people don't bother. They just need leather seats. I think in the last few years, the luxury segment has become most non-VFM. This is due to first-time buyers. People buy for themselves, their family, their partners and whatnot. They just need a BMW or Mercedes, or Porsche. Something similar to millionaires sitting on a regular leather chair, but if someone tries to sell them a Herman-Miller Aeron, they will think 10 times even though one spends most of the time on an office chair (after the mattress). Car seats come after the office chair, but only a few pay attention, sadly.

Looks like BMW India wants to become another Maruti. Remove the exciting cars that make BMW what it is, and replace them with con jobs like the new X1.
