Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

Looks like majority of the automakers are planning to skip the Auto expo all together, as stated by TOI:
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/95109566.cms
Major bummer, i was expecting Mahindra to showcase the 5 door Thar, was also eyeing Royal Enfield to display the Himalayan 450 and the new versions of the 650 platform (scrambler?).
Cost and location are some of the concerns as the manufacturers feel Greater Noida won't give them the right "footfall" and might reconsider if the show happens at Pragati maidan, Delhi.

Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi. Guess it is part of their global strategy of abandoning motor shows in favour of private or digital launches.

Skoda, Volkswagen - Maybe they don't have much to launch or unveil anyways. Except for the Envaq iV.
Renault - They really need some new launches/teaser to keep the interest up. Nowadays, they are even more of a budget brand than Maruti.
Mahindra - Guess they used up their Auto expo quota with the unveil of their BEVs line-up. And guess they have made up their mind to use their proving track for all new launches.
Force - They are yet to launch the T1N that they showed last Auto Expo. So no hope for them to attend this time. Also since the 5 door Gurkha has already reached dealers.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota - Of course they will be present. They can't wait to showcase even more of their strong hybrid tech. Not sure if they are ready to wait till then to unveil the Innova Hycross for India, but the 5 door Jimny will sure be there. Hope, Toyota showcases or even tease any of their CKD/CBU models.

Tata Motors - The usual concept blitz of TATA?
Kia & Hyundai- Hmm.. Can't think of anything other than the Carnival for them to launch. Kia Sportage? Or maybe showcase their hybrid models.
MG - Showcase more of their BEVs.
BYD - They will use this to show their passenger market aspirations.
Isuzu - Finally launch the next gen D-max and MUX? They should seriously look at introducing their commercial vehicle line-up.

Honda too will not participate in the 2023 Auto Expo.

Jeep, Citroen and Volvo too will skip the same.

Japanese icon Honda is also giving the upcoming Auto Expo a miss, likely focusing its marketing activities on the highly anticipated launch of its new mass market SUV for India later in 2023

If not for the restriction on Chinese car makers, we would have had half a dozen of them at the Auto Expo.

Re: Auto makers may apply brakes on Auto Expo 2022

Here is what I am expecting the participating manufacturers to showcase at the Expo:

Hyundai: Facelifted Creta (maybe Alcazar), facelifted i20
Kia: Facelifted Seltos
Tata: Harrier and Safari Facelift, Altroz EV, Harrier EV, Punch EV
MG: Hector Hybrid
Toyota: Innova Hycross
Maruti: Their version of the Hycross, Jimny 5 door

Don't think any of the other brands have anything to launch/show.

So Thar 5 Door wont be showcased in Auto-Expo and that also explains why there are no Test Mules spotting's (there are but less). Due to the backlog, they will be launching it next year during the mid, probably giving time to breathe.

Re: Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

Given the expenses, I am not at all surprised. Besides with data being cheap and most of us hooked to social media, it makes more sense to do launches with influencer's and so called online media.

With so many manufacturers out, I wonder what happen to the plans of those who were thinking of showcasing their wares at the auto expo

Re: Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

The Auto Expo is now such a major snooze-fest. It's an outdated concept in the current times. Sure, if it was well-priced, that would be a different matter, but the fact of the matter is, the Auto Expo costs way too much. Not just in terms of price / crores, but also TIME. OEMs have to spend a lot of effort on the stall design, senior executive availability for presentations / press, logistics etc. The queries amongst the media have changed from "where are you staying for the Expo?" to "are you even going for the expo this year?".

The ROI is simply too poor. They had better make corrections, else the Auto Expo will become completely irrelevant (it is already 70% of the way there). But then, a majority of the world's auto shows are struggling. India's Auto Expo has a USP where it is the only one in a big market that somewhat matters, unlike the USA or EU where there are multiple auto shows competing for the same crowd.

Let's wait & watch. Else, they are going the way of the CD player. Personally, I might visit the Expo '23, but that's because cars run in my blood. We're part of the minority here.

Re: Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

Except for luxury brands, which need more eyeballs for their products to convince prospective buyers, the other mass-market players who are already running 1 year waiting on their products don't need any publicity! These kind of events won't add anything significantly positive to their brand value or top-line sales.

Unfortunately there is not much showcase of concepts/personalizations etc either in India, which can gather crowds.

Personally I find the autoshows in India way too crowded and with limited interaction with the cars, I would rather visit the showroom and sip some coffee while I look at their lineup!

The NY autoshow used to be very different, and I really enjoyed exploring even the commercial and decommissioned army vehicles.

I was banking on the Expo to see the Thar 5 door in person. Maruti would be showcasing the 5 door Jiminy/Gypsy for sure. I most probably would visit the expo, as its my first time.

Re: Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

What I think is they could host a web site and feature a 360 degree video of their concept cars. Or keep things simple and invite only auto journalists to view their concept cars. This way they don't have to spend on having to deal with large crowds and have only select few people to manage. Most of us see the concept cars through videos/photos on Team BHP/Autocar, Youtube etc. This is a win win for all.

Re: Majority of automakers plan to skip Auto Expo 2023

Hello Folks,

A quick question from a layman.

Why is AutoExpo always hosted in NCR region? Why dont they take it to key metros around? There is sufficient infrastructure available.

Bangalore - BIEC
Hyderabad - HITEX
Mumbai - Bombay Exhibition Center

There is diverse crowd in all these locations.

Well perhaps because its comparatively cheaper in Greater Noida region in terms of rental, manpower costs, labour and also the area nearby has much lower rentals for guesthouses/studios/hotels to cater to the visiting automobile firm staff members and executives, compared to Mumbai/Bangalore.

MG 4 electric hatchback to be showcased at Auto Expo 2023.

MG India is currently evaluating a market launch for the MG4 EV. The facelifted Hector and the two-door Air City EV will also be on display at the event.
