Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

From a two horse race, it is fast becoming a one horse stroll for Mercedes Benz. The next period figures would be even more one sided. They owe it to BMW for the puny engines on the new X1.

What to make of Volvo numbers ahead of Audi? Volvo doing well or Audi floundering big time?

Rolls Royce scoring a duck - are billionaires doing that badly?

Volvo is slowly but steadily climbing up the chart. They are planning to go aggressive on EVs and become an EV-only brand by 2025. The reduced taxes should allow them to price their cars aggressively. Will be interesting to watch if they end up being the Tesla of India.

Mercedes has always been ahead of BMW, while the latter has been trying to close the gap from time to time. The X1 is just launched, can't have a bearing on January 2023 figures.

BMW's strategy seems to be very different these days:
  • They have discontinued Regular WB 3-Series and introduced only Li in the LCI. This is a clear move to shift a base 320d sold around 45L On-Road Bangalore to the 70-lakh segment. They've left the 60-lakh segment to X1 with a take-it or leave-it attitude. This, while very disappointing to the enthusiasts, has made 3-er the most affordable self-driven and chauffeur-driven combo, priced way below the E-LWB. I personally believe if you had a budget of around 50 lakh, RWB 320d is all the car you ever needed, even for an enthusiast, however now they don't seem to be interested in that customer.
  • The current 5 is not great with space, so someone going over the 90 lakh mark can either buy the 530d for driving pleasure or E-LWB if chauffeur driven. Rumours are, they will bring out the all new 5 only in LWB, to make the 520d take it head-on with the E-LWB. They're moving the 3-er to the 70-80 lakh segment and 5er to 90-110 lakh segment.
End goal of moving cars across price bands? Profitability. These LWBs priced insanely higher than their predecessors are going to drive much higher revenue and profits even while selling the same number of units. X3 and above are anyway doing quite well with the diesel and petrol engines offered, it is only the X1 that seems to be a bummer. Mercedes on the other hand have a great range of cars lined up in their portfolio, it is no surprise they are doing so well. For our luxury car aspirers they have enough and more in the regular range and for the ones who want more, the AMGs - whereas BMW's M line-up is practically unaffordable for anyone with less than 1.1 -1.2 Crore budget and even there, the starting model is the M2 whereas Mercedes offers AMG variants across sedan and SUV range.

Audi have only themselves to blame. They have the most confused product positioning and engine options for our country.

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

The sales data for March 2023 is out for Mercedes and BMW.
Mercedes has been growing from strength to strength despite offering very little discounts.
BMW has become too greedy of late (case in point: the new X1; launched around January 30th, 2023) and the results are out for everyone to see.

The corresponding sales in the same month of the previous year has been given in brackets.

January 2023
Mercedes Benz: 1248 (1033) : +20%
BMW: 890 (915) : -3%

February 2023
Mercedes Benz: 1043 (1038) : + 0.5%
BMW: 610 (761) : - 20%

March 2023
Mercedes Benz: 1603 (1340) : +20%
BMW: 838 (1034) : -20%

The fact that the BMW has suffered a YoY decline of 20% for two consecutive months immediately upon launching their new bread-n-butter product, the new X1 speaks volumes of the level of sales disaster the new X1 is (i.e, leave alone any growth, the new X1 is not even able to maintain the same monthly sales as the outgoing model). In the same quarter Mercedes has shown a 20% YoY growth for 2 months is testimony to the fact that the luxury car market itself is alive and growing and the problem is not a general one but just specific to BMW alone.

From a 30% domination over BMW in March 2022 (1340 vs 1034) Mercedes has widened the gap to almost 100% over BMW in March 2023 (1640 vs 838)

BMW needs to address this soon with a price correction on X1 or by engine upgrades (very less likely). Mostly they will start giving steep discounts like Audi.

While X1's power options, pricing and all in total is making a dent on sales, I think the withdrawal of SWB 3 series also is an issue. There are lot of enthusiast still around who wants SWB 330i. Keep 20d only in Li version, that is fine but introuce 330i SWB at a lower price point.

That said, let us hope the upcoming launches (New M2C and X3M40i) will bring some attention back while numbers will be too minimal

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

It's great to see MB taking away BMW's market share courtesy of BMW giving us underpowered engines while increasing prices year on year on the account of supply chain issues and rupee depreciation.

Great to see JLR catching up to Volvo even though in a macro sense, the numbers are hardly good enough to keep the coffers running.

Such strategies from companies are going to skyrocket the prices of used cars now in the name of having a bigger and more powerful engine than the newer models

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

Why doesn't Audi release their CKD sales? I see a few articles where they said 2022 total sales is close to 4500. So based on that their monthly sales should be close to 380 or so. Which is half of BMW and BMW is roughly half of Mercedes.

Kudos to BMW's design team for making Mercedes India grow at such a rapid pace. For past few months, Mercedes have constantly improved its sales at the cost of BMW and I guess there's no looking back.

I am amazed that Mercedes has managed to do this despite the Direct to Customer Model, which when it was introduced, everyone was predicting doom and gloom. That These cars are selling WITHOUT deep dealer discounts is amazing (Semiconductor and other shortages notwithstanding)

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

I opted for test drive online with Mercedes Benz and BMW websites for office purchases.

It was absolutely quick to get a call from BU Bhadari Baner for the test drive, that says a lot for the Benz aggressiveness to convert opportunities to sales.

But i just got a SMS from BMW saying that they try to contact me but could not reach and I should contact them if interested. I guess, BMW do not take online requests sincerely and loose some conversion. Because many people would have opted for test drive at residence/office, its difficult for most of the working people to visit their far off showroom (in Pune) for a test drive.

I heard that Audi was offering lucrative discounts in the month of March 2023 for most of its models. Maybe that helped!
