2023 Mahindra Scorpio Classic to get mid-spec S5 trim

Mahindra is all set to introduce its RDE-compliant lineup soon and that includes the 2023 Scorpio Classic. A leaked type approval document has now revealed more details of the upcoming SUV.

The Scorpio Classic was introduced following the launch of the Scorpio-N. At launch, the SUV was offered in two trims: S and S11. It is now expected to get a new mid-spec 'S5' trim. That being said, the Scorpio Classic range will include a total of seven variants offered in 7-seater or 9-seater configurations.

The new mid-spec S5 variant will be positioned between the existing S and S11 trims. It is expected to be offered with steel wheels, halogen headlamps, central locking, an audio system and electrically adjustable ORVMs. This variant is also likely to get safety features like dual airbags, seat belt reminders and speed alerts; among others.

Under the bonnet, the 2023 Scorpio Classic will carry forward the same 2.2-litre diesel engine updated to comply with the RDE norms. In its current configuration, the engine develops 130 BHP and 300 Nm and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Looks like the old Scorpio will be around for a long time. IMO, the new look of the classic is very good. Demand is also very strong.
Last year, many speculated about the discontinuation of this model within 2-3 years.

Dont fix if it aint broke ... SCORPIO CLASSIC IS HERE TO STAY FOR DECENT MORE TIME.

With the new suspension, it has become much more livable for daily commutes too.

I think Bolero NEO, which has found good amount of rural and semi urban takers, will soon take place of Bolero Classic with the Bolero Classic living on in bare lower variants.

Hopefully, overall Bolero brand should see some happening action in the future. Dont think MnM will be looking to be done and dusted with the BOF vehicles anytime soon.

Bare minimum upgrade required for this is AT, if manufacturer is plugging off automatics in 2023 then they do-not want that car for long. I for-see 50%+ AT penetration in 10-20L cars by 2025 and Classic is not ready for that.

Legacy brand image cannot replace must have features

Market research dictates that personal AT customers are less price sensitive. Hence, if someone wants a Scorpio AT, Mahindra will push them toward the Scorpio-N.

Then there is no point of having Classic offering in the longer run, because market will move to AT, there is no doubt. I read sometime back that in 2020 AT had 20% market share (average across all), today that number would be over 25% and much higher in 10L+ segment. Resale value of AT cars compared to manual counterparts is clear indication of where auto market is heading.

Even Alto / Nano / Kwid have AT variants. I believe Classic is a short term offering, they will launch an updated Scropio targeted towards Tier 2/3 buyers in next couple of years.
