Kia Carens could get Diesel iMT & new 5-seater base variants

The Kia Carens will soon receive updated engines to comply with the new RDE emission norms. Besides the engines, the carmaker is also likely to introduce new variants to the Carens lineup.

According to leaked type approval certificates, the Carens could be offered in a Diesel iMT trim. This variant will use the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 114 BHP and is expected to be paired with a 6-speed iMT.

The Carens could also get new entry-level 5-seater petrol and diesel variants. As per the document, these could be called M-Drive and P-Drive, respectively. The P-Drive is expected to be positioned below the Premium trim and could be offered in 5-seater and 7-seater configurations.

At present, the Carens is available with three engine options. These include a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 113 BHP and 144 Nm, a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol with 138 BHP and 242 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel that puts out 113 BHP and 250 Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The 1.4 turbo petrol is facing the axe. Surprising that they don’t seem to have plans to offer the new 1.5 turbo petrol in Carens. They could have detuned it a bit from the 160bhp of Alcazar to maintain positioning difference. The sweet turbo petrol was the reason self driven buyers preferred Carens over Maruti XL6.

I believe the 1.5 turbo petrol will make it's way to the Carens soon. Given that Carens is consistently doing 5000+ vehicles per month and is just 1 year old in the market, I do not think Kia will let go of the sales from the 1.4 turbo that easy. Once Kia/Hyundai are done with the new launches, the 1.5 should hopefully be introduced in the Carens as well. Else, they have no option but to start selling the 1.5 NA in the higher variants as well.

Whats a 5 seater Carens if not a Seltos? More boot space?

Seltos minus the looks

Jokes aside, it must be a tactic to give a lower sticker price for the base variants

Will a 5 seater Carens count as a Station wagon?

Well, the regular 7-seater's body type is mentioned as 'Station wagon' in the RC. So, the 5-seater will obviously be registered as a station wagon.

A reliable source has shared some information pertaining to this and apparently the Kia Carens is entering the commercial business. Hence I'm not surprised that they are going for the 5 seater version, that's more luggage space instead of the the 216 litres in the current 7 seater version.

Taxi owners prefer 7 seater over a 5 seater anyday

They appreciate the flexibility to fold up rear seats to free up cargo space (if only 3 or 4 customers are travelling) than not having a rear seat at all

And it did!

Kia has ditched the 6-speed manual gearbox in favor of the iMT one for 1.5 turbo petrol and 1.5 diesel.

The 1.5 turbo petrol and diesel are available across all the variants. The 1.5 NA continues to be offered with the same 6-speed manual gearbox in Premium and Prestige trims.

Also, all the engines are now equipped with Idle stop and Go (ISG). The 5-seater is not on offer, yet!

Not just Carens, Seltos and Sonet too now come with 6-speed iMT instead of 6-speed MT. Are we seeing the final hurrah of Hyundai-Kia diesels before Strong Hybrids take over ?
