Kia Carens 1.5L turbo-petrol launched at Rs 12 lakh

Kia has updated the Carens line-up with RDE-compliant engines that are also compliant with E20 fuel. The carmaker has also replaced the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine with a new 1.5-litre unit, while the turbo-petrol and diesel variants now get a 6-speed iMT instead of a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine powering the Carens makes 158 BHP and 253 Nm, which is 20 BHP & 11 Nm more than the outgoing motor. It is offered with either a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT.

Kia has retained the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. While the former makes 113 BHP and 144 Nm and is paired with a 6-speed manual, the oil burner packs 113 BHP and 250 Nm and is offered with 6-speed iMT and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Besides the changes in powertrains, Kia has also tweaked the feature offerings. Most important, the 12.5-inch digital instrument cluster is now available across all variants. That being said, prices have also been increased. The turbo-petrol and diesel variants now cost Rs 50,000 more, while the prices of the petrol variants have gone up by Rs 25,000.

What is it with Hyundai offering either the iMT or DCT? Talk about being in between the devil and the sea. There is already the DCT for automatic lovers, so why not just offer manual instead of iMT!!!

Kia wants to ease manual drivers. So they discontinued the manual and offered iMT with all their 3 cars
Hopefully Hyundai also would follow the same.

Is thr diesel AT also a DCT? How good are the Kia DCTs in traffic? Do they have heating issues and failures?

Have you guys seen any reviews of the 1.5 TGDI engine performance yet? Considering it is the heart of all the leading car variants of the Hyundai-Kia stables, it should be a hotly anticipated point.

Offering iMT on cars that are not aimed at enthusiasts is a good idea. You save 1 lakh and the risks involved with DCT (overheating and less reliable than manual) and still get to have the comfort of not using a clutch.

The only time I would definitely need a clutch with a MT car is when I am buying a VRS or a 1.5TSI car or something similar that I would not use much in city traffic.

Diesel comes with torque converter. No overheating issues like DCT and more robust too I believe.

The 1.4 DCT Prestige Plus was the most VFM variant. Now the 1.5 DCT breaches the 15L mark, increasing the tax (here in Kerala) and costing over a lakh additional for on the road pricing. It would be wiser to get hold of any left over 1.4 DCT Prestige+ stock before April.

Which entry level variant is recommended for buyers who have a budget of 15L or thereabouts? We don't have any reviews for the iMT variant. I wonder how they are to drive.

So they are charging a premium of 1.5 lacs for iMT over manual and an additional 1 lac for DCT over iMT.

Why dont the manufacturers provide TC transmissions these days? They are robust, well tested, been for ages and can handle stop-go/crawling traffic better.

Hyundai has started this too. i20 N Line doesn't come with MT or iMT now. Only DCT is available.

No, they are charging a premium of Rs. 1.5L for a 1.5L Turbo Petrol iMT engine/ transmission comapred to a 1.5L NA Petrol MT engine/transmission.

Kia does provide the TC gearbox in Diesel for the Carens.

I think it can be seen as an AMT where you step off the gas to change gears in manual mode in order to reduce the head-nod effect!

Re: Kia Carens 1.5L turbo-petrol launched at Rs 12 lakh

I have read that the turbo petrol gives lower FE than the NA engine of same size. With higher torque, it should be possible to upshift sooner in Turbo petrol engine and it should be actually more fuel efficient than NA engine which has to be revved higher, is it not?
