Maruti Suzuki began exporting made-in-India vehicles in FY1986-87. The first big shipment of 500 cars was dispatched to Hungary in September 1987. Today, the carmaker has expanded its presence to nearly 100 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

According to Maruti Suzuki, exports to advanced markets helped the company to benchmark its performance against international standards.

Re: Maruti Suzuki records global exports of 2.5 million units

Considering that Maruti has produced over 25 million cars since it commenced production in 1983, the export figure of 2.5 million (10%) looks modest. They should be exporting at least a third of their production, if not more. It will also be pertinent to find out Maruti's foreign exchange outflow on importing components and on dividend repatriation to Suzuki, in order to know what net foreign exchanged it truly earned for the country.
