4th and 5th gear are overdrive in the Palio GTX/Sport + Petra + Adventure. The only car to not have overdrive in 4th is the S10! Btw, don't you have a new car? Why would you want to open the gear box at this stage?

After reading this, I feel I was lucky to buy a 2001 1.2 Palio ELX.

Yes..it has Made in Italy written all over it...

For the rear & front windshield...its by Pelkington(made in Brazil). What's for the newer ones?

Also what about the alternator..for 2001 models..it's imported..

Moral, nice observation. I think these quality were with even older 1.2. I have Oct 01 model. My car does have rotator to bend the seat might be from Tata Johnson. I can not spot other differences in older GTX and 1.2 right now cause I am in USA.

Now I feel was really lucky to get a 2001 Dec 1.6 GTX at a price of 1.9L. I was thinking to buy a new 1.6 sport and then at the last minute changed my mind as 1.6 GTX has ABS and airbags.

yes that one,the one that hides the gap(blacked portion) between the 2 doors.

The OEMs still have quality checks in place. The design and material details are provided to all the vendors. Vendors can't just manufacture anything they like.

Unless the OEMs CHOOSE to go for lesser quality components, I can't see how localization can affect the quality.

that also means that they don't have sufficient control over their vendors OR that their quality processes are not strong enough to extract quality work from 3rd party vendors

Especially now that foreign carmakers are sourcing parts from Indian auto ancilliary industry!!

Actually it is BS to say that localization affects quality. It should not if you have the same standards and quality checks as anywhere else. There is no rocket science in manufacturing things like rubber beadings, headlamp assemblies and similar stuffs which constitute the 70-80% of the car and are the most localized parts. Its just that the companies do not maintain the standards and also to go cheap accept will-do kind of parts. and then when the idea fails they complain.

rather than localization i think cost cutting should be blamed .. any idea what palio was priced at in 2001 ? when dad got the 1.2nv i never would have imagined that we would get a 1.6 sport for almost the same price in around 3 years time :)

Kiran, excellent thread. Its very interesting to know what changes have been incorporated into the newer 1.6's.
