Hopefully Suzuki has done some work on improving the safety and atleast top variants get 6 airbag and host of other safety features.
I don't think any future cars will launch without 6 airbags in at least one variant. In case of Swift, my sources say that all variants will be equipped with 6 airbags. Let's see if it turns out that way.

I see a lot of high FE figures being touted by some dimwit journos. If the figures were brag worthy, I am sure Suzuki would have done so. It is thus reasonable to expect a bump in FE but may not be something drastic like 35-40kmpl.

Looking at the market, I see the Swift as the new Alto (a fun to drive, better looker than the Alto, but definitely a range starter), maybe 5 years or so later.

Re: Suzuki to debut Z-Series engine on the 4th-gen Swift

I seriously hope for following on the next gen Swift:

1. 4/5 Star GNCAP rating with stable body structure

2. An optional RS variant (only in case point 1 is met !) , with a 4 cylinder Turbocharged engine producing >=150 ps and 250nm. The 3 Pot NA can be kept for the lower variant/mass market.

3. An option to chose between Automatic transmissions (a.la Nexon 23). AMT for the lower variants and DCT/TC for the top variants.

4. 195/60 R 15 on the mid and higher variants and 185 / 65 R15 for the lower variants. NO puny and thin 165 / 80 R14 Please !

Lets make SWIFT great again, Maruti !

Exactly, Maruti still offers the same window switches, door handles and much more from the 2013 Dzire VXI my dad has. Even the key still remains similar for Sigma, Delta variants @ Nexa which is supposed to be premium than Arena models like our Swift Dzire.

Re: Suzuki to debut Z-Series engine on the 4th-gen Swift

Saw the Autocar episode today and the host was in Japan showing the exteriors and interiors of a blue coloured new 4th Gen Swift. He could barely hide his chuckles especially when showing the interiors. The equipment, fit finish, parts etc are all that we have seen before in MSIL products on sale already, especially the Baleno. Even the rear space is just about the same.

To my eyes, there is truly nothing new and Maruti is simply updating the Swift to bring it at par with other cars it sells. When it comes to the engine, it's clearly a downgrade no matter what is said. 4-cylinders, IMHO, are any day nicer than a 3-pot.

Re: Suzuki to debut Z-Series engine on the 4th-gen Swift

Z12 + CVT is good, if Maruti is planning it instead of the AMTs for India too. 20-25kmpl will be manageable with the combo on open roads.

Currently the most fuel efficient NA, non-hybrid is CELERIO K10 1.0 3cyl with 26.68 kmpl ARAI rated, weighing 800-835kg.

Re: Suzuki to debut Z-Series engine on the 4th-gen Swift

Swift has always been in demand because it's an excellent package for the budget it is sold into.
MSL will not offer a hybrid in the Swift coz this will alter its USP.
Rather offering a lighter 3-cylinder, fuel-efficient engine will further increase its USP, and IMHO, it will sell like hotcakes.

Re: Suzuki to debut Z-Series engine on the 4th-gen Swift

Honestly - sad to see a 3 cylinder motor coming into the Swift. I have no information about the Z12e of course - but refinement can be presumed to be lower than the K12x if history is to go by. Also - if the touted fuel efficiency figures are taken into account - its safe to imagine that the car will be reluctant to set the roads on fire. Overall - a Swift, that might not be really Swift - and that really will be criminal given the halo that surrounds the name plate. Really hope that a performance oriented version with a turbo / larger NA is also available for those who simply want to drive for the heck of it, and not to find the KMPL numbers.

News like these - immediately remind us of the importance (and our good luck) of the fast 1.5L turbo sedans (3 of them) that are available for us to buy right now, also with fast gearboxes. If the mass-market cars are really going to start dumbing down and lead to EVs in coming few years - the 1.5 turbos and DCTs might be the last hurrah of petrol ICEs in our market for all its worth.

Swift's newly developed Z12E type 1197cc, inline 3DOHC.

- Swift's fuel efficiency (WLTC) increased by 17% (20.0km/L --> 23.4km/L)

Improved fuel economy and reduced emissions:

The newly developed Z12E has a high-efficiency engine, but there are a wide range of points that have made it possible.

[Fuel consumption]

・Revised EGR settings to achieve high thermal efficiency
・Tournament method adopted for EGR gas introduction ・Atkinson cycle cooling air was expanded by adopting intake VVT to achieve high thermal efficiency
・Ideal cooling water volume control was achieved by adopting an electric water pump
・Belt tension is reduced by using a pendulum tensioner.

Low emissions

・Improved performance of the three-way catalyst, realization of high-speed fuel with a newly developed cylinder head, and suppression of abnormal combustion by improving the cooling of the combustion chamber

・In addition to improving fuel efficiency with the engine alone, the adoption of a new high-efficiency CVT is also a point that should not be overlooked. The CVT alone achieves a weight reduction of 1.9 kg, and at the same time, high fuel efficiency is achieved by effectively absorbing rotation fluctuations from the engine.

・Nowadays, strong hybrids and series hybrids are becoming mainstream for compact cars, but the fuel efficiency of Swift's gasoline engine and mild hybrid, which is cheaper and more affordable than them, cannot be underestimated!
