Rumour: BMW 5 Series bookings halted in India; next-gen to launch in Q3 2024

According to a media report, BMW India has directed its dealers to stop taking orders for the 5 Series. It is said that the premium sedan has been sold out as BMW prepares to launch the eight-gen 5 Series in India.

The eighth-generation 5 Series made its global debut in May this year. As per reports, it is expected to be launched in India in the third quarter of 2024. BMW also plans to introduce the all-electric i5 around the same time.

In India, the 5 Series is likely to get 2.0-litre petrol (520i) and diesel (520d) engines but will miss out on the plug-in hybrid powertrain options available globally.

The i5, on the other hand, comes in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The entry-level eDrive40 variant has a range of 582 km, while the top-spec M60 xDrive dual-motor version packs 593 BHP and 820 Nm and can cover 516 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle). It is still unclear as to which variant will make it to India.

Mercedes-Benz is also expected to launch the next-gen E-Class in India around the same time.

Re: Rumour: BMW 5 Series bookings halted in India; next-gen to launch in Q3 2024

This would make sense, as kits would need to be imported from global factories for CKD assembly in Chennai. The factories making these kits would have stopped producing them and started making the next generation of kts.

However, BMW wants to launch the long wheelbase version of the new 5 in India, the kits for which may not yet be ready to ship from global factories. This may be the reason for the Q4 2024 projected launch. It would then create a gap of almost a year or so, when the 5 series will not be available in the Indian market.

In my opinion, this is a bad move as customers in the executive sedan segment would migrate towards available alternatives such as the A6 and E-Class in the meantime and it would be hard to get back the momentum in this competitive segment. BMW should instead introduce the regular wheelbase 5 series ASAP and introduce a long wheelbase later on in the year, just to make sure they do not have a gaping hole in the portfolio when it comes to the all important executive sedan segment in India.

They should bring in a few units as CBU to fill this almost a year long gap :o
Similar to what Mercedes did with S class launch edition.
