Somedays back in college a friend and i were talking about his previously owned cars, when we came upon his Fiat UNO. Both fans of the UNO, we got talking to the point where he told me that his UNO would do '120 kmph in 2nd gear' At which point i stopped talking. That's right, you may want to read that again, because i sure as hell didn't believe it. And confirmed about 57 more times, before i let him go home. Apparently, his car was number 400 of 400 cars imported right from Italy, no indiginisation whatsoever. His car ran Weber carbs and was full of Lancia badging under the hood. I can't seem to find much on the web, but am still looking. The UNO shifted to Mikuni carbs in 1999, this was around 1996. So if somebody can confirm or cn shed any sort of light i'd be more than grateful. Bloody Unbelievable. This guy usually knows what he's talking about, so i took his word this time.

damm! me hearing this for the first time..never really heard abt it. a friend of mine has a very old Uno.. lemme confirm with him.! But if its true.. .then that would have been our version of the Lancia Delta HF Integrale:p

I think , we should start hunting for the oldest Indian Uno's ,
any idea , when was the uno launched exactly.

120 in second gear, Vtec owners ko jhatka , !!!!!!!!!!

Honestly as u did *Ported head , I doubt his claim .
1000 cc naturally aspired engine tuned for india developing a meesly 45 ponies doing 120 in second gear ( no matter what carb it uses ) seems really doubtful .
can u inquire where is yr friends car currently and the car number if possible ,
our team-bhp network will definately trace it.

A friend of mine had one of the first petrol Unos in dark blue colour. I dont know about the 120 in second gear but yes his brother told me their Uno had a larger engine since it was one of the first imports and not the 1000cc. And yes his brother was a Pilot so one can imagine how he drives. His Uno used to fly andI have been around with his brother driving. Trust me it was real fast.

Hmmm.... 120 in second gear?!..thats the same as the Skoda Octavia RS 1.8 (actually 2km/h more)

ummm...yeah...thats the only comment i have.

R

120km/h in 2nd gear? Whatever carbs one uses, this sounds difficult to me. Big time!
If it was a larger engine, what were the specs? As far as I know, this same 1 Litre 45bhp unit was being used in Italian Unos too.
In India, we did get a larger engine in the end - the 1.2L lump that is somewhat better.

total crap.. have taken delivery and driven personally one of the first 100 Unos launched in the country and it was sluggish.. it was in the family for quite a number of years and sold last year..

ya i doubt even the first batch of Uno's had less than 75% of local content. Uno was indegenised to a very high extent before they actually launched it. Maybe his is a modded car.

There used to be a Uno Turbo sold abroad

My feeling is that the car had twin carbs and a bigger engine. I also remember the South African Uno being more powerful and bigger than the 1.0 FIRE engine. So its possible it was the South African car or some other with twin carbs and a higher compression ratio.

Umm, before you doubt this fella think about my experience.

In end 1995, There was an absolute war going on between the Peugeot 309 and the Maruti Esteem. Both newly launched, both with similar horsepower figures. There were loyalists to either camp.

I booked the Esteem (which I am still driving). One fine sunday morning, my best friend comes up and tells me "My uncle has just got a 309 and it will BLOW your Esteem away to smithereens. Hahaha...I thought, always ready to take up a challenge. My best friends reply "Trust me, you dont wanna think of racing against this 309".

We went over to check out the 309. Our lower jaw dropped.

It was black, had 17 inch alloy wheels, a spoiler and a full body kit. 4 Fogs in the front. Disc brakes all around. But the beef? A 1.9 liter 16 valve DOHC 160 horsepower motor! And this was in 1995!

His uncle (an ex-manager with PAL-Peugeot) took us for a spin to the seaface and back. The acceleration was astounding and to date, one of the most exciting I have taken on Indian roads.

So the next time someone tells you he has a really really fast Peugeot 309 (or even an Uno), check it out first.

I used to have the 1.6 version of the 309, engine is sweeter and it was one of the best handling cars I have driven, the best is the Boxster

No pal, no Jhatka's here.

He said 120kmph in 2nd gear, not 0-120kmph in 10secs. LOL

Maybe it does 120 in 2nd gear which might take something close to eternity.
