Given the country's diversity, as the sales charts have been demonstrating time and again, only a nexon and a punch, with a harrier thrown here and a safari thrown there, would take Tata only thus far.

Some Surprising numbers

- Just 10 Sonets for Dec-23? Is it because of the facelift? However, outgoing models with deep discounts should see some fair numbers.
- Jeep Meredian doubled in Dec. Is it the discounts which resulted in fair pricing that customers feel is a value?
- Carens dropped by almost 45%
- Maruti's Alto, Celerio, S-Presso and Ignis dying by 80%
- Toyota with increased sales across all models when others see dropping sales.

I am glad Tata pulled out of taxi market. Because they were constantly referred to as a Taxi brand, in Indica/Sumo days. It looked almost like a campaign against Tata brand started by God-knows-who but it quickly caught on everywhere.

Today millions of Maruti(Alto, Wagon R, Dzire, Swift), Hyundai (Xcent, i10), Toyota(Innovas) are taxis but but no one calls them taxi brands. Funny indeed.

A sharp drop in share for Maruti. Any reasons?
Maruti has shutdown in last week of June and December. So, that would be the reason.

Yet, it's a good achievement by Tata.

Wow!!! 2 TATAs in top 3. Who would have thought?

Ofcourse its mostly due to year end, maruti would have shipped less but still a good feat never the less.

Guess this is the 1st time in last couple of decades such a scenario is witnessed. I hope TATA sorts out its QA & A.S.C issues on war-footing. A great turn-around story.

VAG group too seems to be doing well. All their VAG 2.0 cars seem to be doing respectable numbers and I see lot of them pretty often. Few of my colleagues picked up the Virtus and are happy with the performance. It looks dope!!!

Honda Elevate clearly took away City customers. They are shipping 8k cars for domestic market a month and capacity is ~15k. Am assuming ~4-5k exports, so are they already running full capacity(considering current capacity i.e.)? If that's the case don't think numbers will change any further unless they increase plant capacity.

Would be a good idea to have Scorpio classic vs N numbers. 11k+ for it is insane

Very good for VAG owners, whether it's the OG CBU/CKD owners or the localised car people
+1

Consistent numbers even when market leaders like Hyundai/Kia launched new cars in the segment is really good from VAG. Virtus/Slavia together have been selling 3500-4000 every month since launch. Discounts on 1L TSI specially would have helped but the GTs are not getting much of a discount is what I heard from my dealer.

Hyundai might have released lesser Verna's from the factory this month or prioritised the new Creta but Verna is not giving the number they would have expected despite being superior than the VAG twins in interior quality and feature set. It is almost a lac cheaper than the twins and I heard dealers are giving decent discounts on Verna to clear the stock.

Honda customers are now taking Elevate instead of City which reflects in the numbers since the Elevate was launched.

Elevate has taken numbers from City as well as Amaze. From ~8k between City and Amaze at the beginning of the year to ~8k among Elevate, City and Amaze at the end of the year. Though hardly any improvement in numbers, HMICL has a much more balanced portfolio now and are well placed to keep production at optimal capacity in 2024. I think they can call it a successful year for them.

Tata Motors does this sort of number game in December month. Perhaps because of heavy discounts to the end user and some benefits to the dealerships.

I just wonder if VW numbers are because of December discounts or whether this will be a proper long term trend with an uptick in sales. For Hyundai and Maruti, December numbers are usually muted. But kudos to VW if they can keep these numbers up.

re: December 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is strange to see that sales of Maruti's hatchback models have been on a declining trend.
I wonder if this is due to consumer's losing interest or Maruti prioritizing production of SUVs over hatchbacks.

Also great to see VAG doing good numbers and overtaking Honda. I guess new features, discounts, increased dealer footprint and better word of mouth of service are starting to show their effect.

re: December 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Great numbers for TATA, their R & D efforts are paying off big-time. Curvv will be an excellent addition to their already great lineup, looking forward to seeing how it will impact the Creta-Seltos dominance in the segment.

Honda hasn't been able to revive itself, both their sedans are seeing declining numbers. Will be an uphill battle to recover from here. Sad cause the City used to be everybody's favourite. VW group has taken over its segment with Slavia and Virtus. The Elevate was always undercooked as a product in my opinion and the sales are also showing that.

Fortuner still selling 3k units per month is absolutely mind-boggling, for an overpriced and overhyped car people have gone bonkers. Can't blame them though seeing the other cars in the category :/, New endeavour if brought back in 2025 will cut through the sales of Fortuner if Toyota doesn't revamp it.

re: December 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Ironically, BMW (0.38%) and Mercedes (0.45%) have a bigger market share than Citroen (0.23%) or Jeep (0.15%) now. It would actually make more sense to include these brands though the sales are spread across a wider range - that is if these brands actually reveal the sales numbers of the individual models!

Stellantis is in trouble - no two ways around this. Renault-Nissan is blowing their chance by delaying the Duster as well.

re: December 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The story of December can be written off by many as Suzuki India having plant shutdowns etc. But what is significant is that this has never stopped them from leading the charts. So, there are few possibilities as to why this happened.

A) They have some internal problems with their dealers because of which their dispatches have had to decrease even for their models with good order book and backlogs. Seems unlikely as there is no noise anywhere. What is confusing to me though is that I remember someone from Suzuki India saying that they had record retails in December of 2,39,000. What was that all about?

B) Suzuki had production constraints but again this is unlikely as there is no real problems at any other OEM. Also, their dispatch numbers are similar to last year with exports not increasing so much. So, this is a non-issue.

The truth may be anything but what is clear TATA has not taken its foot off the accelerator for the past many quarters. The noise in the market is that the pedal will only go closer to the metal in the coming years till 2030 for TATA. Other OEMs better watch out. Of course, there can be many uncertainties in the meanwhile but all things being OK, TATA looks unstoppable.

Planned annual maintenance shutdown during December last week is the reason. No production happens and no dispatches.

@Carma2017: Suzuki India saying that they had record retails in December of 2,39,000. What was that all about?

What i saw in FADA report is that, the inventory levels at the dealerships is 50-60 days demand. Means even if wholesale (Factory to dealerships) is less the retail (dealership to consumers) could be higher. I also think that with over 50 days average inventory at the market, there would not be too much waiting for most of the models. The ripple effect of these high inventories could be seen in Q2 2024.

re: December 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I'm constantly surprised at Glanza's numbers considering it's a simple rebadge job. Does anyone know how much percentage Toyota earn from Glanza sales?

Also kind of sad for Hyundai's numbers. Don't think they'll be able to overtake Tata from now on since Tata is offering multiple powertrains for their cars like Tiago, Altroz, Nexon and Punch.
Suzuki and Hyundai are still not ready to roll out their EV versions of Swift and i10 which could transform their numbers.
