Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

I believe Motillal Oswal would have felt very positive about how Indian manufacturers had upped their playing ground and even he was convinced to buy one for his personal transport.
That's about it, he posted in X to express his positivity.

I am a thousandaire who bought a Punch and believe it is a conservative buy.

A billionaire buying a Safari and calling it conservative is absolutely appropriate, IMHO.

I think its a good move. Billionaires of our country should buy indian cars as well. It may boost or create confidence in our Indian car industry.

Fully agree! I am all praise for Mr. Oswal for buying a TATA, but other MNC Automakers are as Indian as TATA's and Mahindra's due to the global supply chain of Auto Parts.

For Example,

1. Relatively easy & mechanical components like sheet metal & Plastics parts are made by Indian Suppliers only for all manufactures (JBM & the likes)

2. Functional and Critical components like Engine parts, ECUs & sensors are too assembled & sourced locally from MNC suppliers by all Indian & MNC suppliers (the likes of Denso, Bosch & others)

Only difference is as to where the profit & Royalties are going & invested into by the respective manufacturers, In that sense, buying a TATA is good choice.

but from a Purely product sense, a TATA is no different from a Maruti, Hyundai, etc. & those too can use the "Vocal for Local" Tagline

Not poor at all.. truth can be bitter at times.

Safari is a fantastic car given you are lucky to bypass niggles/issues and hope TAMO does improve ASS experience in future.

Any idea what is Oswal's investment in TAMO share?

So, Tata Safari - Billionaire's choice. Motilal Oswalji finally found his calling, away from the world of finance ratios.

Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

From the words in the original post, it feels like a part of him is sad for sacrificing the foreign luxuries and a part of him is happy for doing something patriotic, which the PMO would also find impressive.

It's definitely a shot in the arm for Tamo.

Some of the posts above were really funny, had a hearty laugh reading them!

On the flip side, I'd agree with you and say those who are getting stuff done and sorting their lives have less time to languish online.

On a lighter note

On peeling layers - The mHawk and mEagle engine would have several parts engineered by global giants like Bosch. Koni, a European specialist, designs the suspension. Global players like Delphi, Subros or Denso most likely engineer the aircon. The glass and pano roof is done by Saint Gobain or Ashai Glass.

We have been living in a globalized world for centuries. Marketing departments invent slogans to push their wares.

Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

As a fellow Safari owner who had the same emotions when I bought my Safari in 2021, I only wish that he shares the same enthusiasm 2 years and 80,000 kms down the line. 2 months in the garage for replacement of rusting doors, now another 25 days for finding metal particles in the diesel filter and replacing the fuel tank, fuel lines, pumps et al under warranty, wrongly allotted part numbers for the spare parts which even the local dealers are not aware of. The list goes on an on. It's like being a ferrari driver for team ferrari.
The only good thing that I can confidently say about TATA is that they are safe, at par or even better than the German or the European manufacturers. If only TATA put in a better effort for quality and consistency....

All good and apparently noble intentions but I wonder why is @PMOIndia tagged in the post, does he expect a pat on the back for buying a TATA car?

Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

This is exactly what the guy hopes to achieve, the general public discussing this and taking sides. Why give an already well-off dude some more of what he wants, for free, on our forum?! Let him do what all other celebs and politicians do- pay a PR agency to plant stories in newspapers and social media.

Let him buy whatever he wants, let's not get worked up about it, either way. We already fall for these self-promoting PR stunts by cricketers (x has turned vegan, etc.) and Bollywood folk (y does yoga, z's fitness routine). Should we now fall for this from celeb business owners too?!

Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

I'm surprised seeing a lot of negativity in the comments.

Like it or not, the opinions of billionaires and public figures like Mr. Oswal do have a lot of impact.

Koreans are partial to buying mostly Korean cars, Germans are the same. There is a certain sense of patriotism in many countries. Why can't we follow suit?

Him being public about his purchase and saying "vocal-for-local" is a great move. If more public figures and celebrities become more vocal like him, they have the power to make buying Tata and Mahindra cars the "cool" thing to do.

I hope more influential figures follow in his footsteps.

Re: Billionaire Motilal Oswal goes ‘vocal for local’; buys Tata Safari

Tata Motors is doing a good job and I am all up for 'vocal for local' - people in other countries do it. In a country where many take pride in bragging about all things foreign, this new direction is good IMHO.

Car makers are riding on this 'Make in India' wave - but I think, they are taking a few things for granted: When I decided to buy a new car about three months ago with a budget of 20 to 40L, I was super excited for the new Harrier and I was certain I would go for the Harrier blindly. When I first saw the car, it looked great. A colleague owns the Safari and I know how (badly) it drives. I expected a lot to change with the facelifted versions of the Harrier and Safari given all the hype. One small test drive and I concluded that Harrier is not for me - it felt like I was driving a 10-year-old car, with no finesse and the new steering felt weird. Despite all the new features and soft-touch materials that looked great, the quality & engineering didn't meet my expectations. Same story with Mahindras: Both XUV 7oo and Thar didn't feel like good cars apart from the looks. Nexon, on the other hand, is a great product. Even the door handles felt better engineered in the Nexon than the Harrier.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that the manufacturers must focus on engineering along with 'butch-appeal' and not just on the latter. There is a reason Germans and Koreans buy 'local' with little regret. Any reflection on Mr. Oswal's post can only be political, but being an architect/designer, I fail to understand how an almost 2-ton, 4.7m x 1.9m footprint car is minimal
