Re: Considering a Wagon R? Nope, please get the Ignis instead We were looking to say goodbye to our beloved Nano. Due to the tight, dedicated parking space in our society—where I used to park both my big bikes and the car—our choice was limited to a small hatchback.
We initially considered the Swift, but since both my father and mother are elderly, they found it too low. So, with a heavy heart, I finally decided to go for the Wagon R, as it addressed our primary concern: easy ingress and egress, along with comfortable seats for senior citizens.
I had driven the Wagon R multiple times of my friends. There was nothing wrong with it everything was perfect, like Sarvagun Sampann. It was reliable, practical, comfortable, frugal, and an ideal family car. However, if pushed hard—which is quite unreasonable for a tallboy hatchback—the dynamics weren’t as stable.
Right next to the Maruti Arena showroom was a Nexa showroom. Out of curiosity, I walked in to check out the Baleno, hoping it had a better seating position than the Swift. But it was similar. While there, I casually checked out the Ignis. The last time I had seen it was during its launch at the Auto Expo, where I instantly liked its design. Over time, I had forgotten about it, but seeing it again, the design grew on me.
My father sat in the Ignis and immediately said it felt better than the Swift for him. He found it easier to get in and out, thanks to its higher seating. While the Ignis isn’t exactly a tallboy, its seats are positioned high enough to be comfortable for senior citizens.
Having driven both cars on winding ghat roads, I found that the Ignis had a different driving dynamic. Since it isn’t a typical tallboy design, you can feel the difference in sharp turns, especially at higher speeds. The Ignis also has better grip due to its tires, and its ‘80s-inspired hatchback design likely offers better aerodynamics compared to the Wagon R’s boxy shape.
One more thing—the Wagon R, unfortunately, carries the stigma of being an Uber/Ola cab, and Maruti no longer offers special editions like the Wagon R Stingray, which once appealed to private buyers. This gave the Ignis an edge. The only downside of the Ignis is its light-colored interior, which requires extra care.
If the Wagon R is Sarvagun Sampann, then the Ignis goes beyond that! |
