MG VS HEV Hybrid leaked ahead of its official launch

The upcoming MG Astor facelift has been revealed via leaked images. The SUV is expected to be launched in India soon.

The updated MG Astor looks rather striking in its new avatar. The SUV has a redesigned front bumper with a diamond mesh grille. It is flanked by reprofiled headlamps, with a blue strip stretching across the front fascia.

The rear end of the Astor looks more familiar though. The shape of the taillights has been retained, but the internals look new. The SUV has a redesigned rear bumper, a roof spoiler with an integrated stop lamp, and a rear wiper. The updated Astor also gets new dual-tone alloy wheels.

The spy images also provide a glimpse of the car’s interior. The Astor gets an all-black cabin with dual screens and a 3-spoke steering wheel. The centre console has been updated and now features an electronic parking brake and a redesigned gear lever.

Technical details of the new Astor are still unknown. That being said, the current model is offered with two engine options. These include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 108 BHP and 144 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual and CVT and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that puts out 138 BHP and 220 Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

UPDATE: it is indeed the MG ZS HEV. Hidden during the MG-JSW media event.

If this is incoming to India, then it should be Hybrid, SHEV. There is a clear HEV badge in the back, and that also explains the blue strip up front. Could it be the 1.5 Hybrid that was showcased some time back?

Correction. It is the MG VS HEV. Can't edit the post any longer, hence a new one.

This appears to be a significant improvement over the current Aster design.

I agree that MG may have drawn inspiration from TATA's design language for the front design, and from Hyundai's earlier design language for the rear.

Ahh, finally a car without the connected tail light bs.
They should price it right and it would see a good number of sales.

re: MG VS HEV Hybrid leaked ahead of its official launch

This is not the facelift model of Astor but the HEV version known as VS HEV. This was recently showcased (not to public) in the MG JSW event. Also Bunny already confirmed the same in his tweet.

You can also see him covering this car in Thailand:

This ZS platform-based model was showcased about a year ago. I just hope the interior makes it to the Astor and ZS which is way better than the current one along with a better camera setup.

The first picture sort of reminds me of a sedan’s front profile.

The Astor’s NA engine is perhaps the most depressing one I’ve ever driven. It feels like flogging two dead horses together. I don’t know who even buys it, honestly.

I wish the engines have been given a better tune this time around, and some missed basics like auto dimming rear view mirror have been added now. Also, I hope moving the MG logo to the bonnet means we don't see the hideous looking "MORRIS GARAGES" lettering anymore there

re: MG VS HEV Hybrid leaked ahead of its official launch

The car is available in few markets from 2022.

VS is the strong hybrid version of ZS with thorough update to interiors and fascia.

Battery : 2KWH Li-ion
Engine : 1.5P 109ps 142NM and eCVT
Motor : 95ps 200NM, combined claims around 177ps
0-100 : 7.9sec

It's a performance oriented hybrid rather than the Toyota versions, but with good fuel efficiency on highway speeds.

Pricing is 10% higher than petrol version and 10% lower than EV versions in many markets, so we can also expect around 14L for it in India.

Dashboard reminds me of SELTOS with AC vent shapes, big step up from ZS as well as ASTOR.

English translation available, review from otodriver Indonesia

If it goes well we can expect MG 3 hybrid against SWIFT or Baleno too, another performance hybrid.

re: MG VS HEV Hybrid leaked ahead of its official launch

This could indeed be a significant launch in the Indian market. So far only Toyota & Maruti have been able to bring strong hybrids in this segment, an ideal segment to bring in Hybrids because people use these for long daily commutes as well as long highway drives. While Toyota and Maruti are able to offer ICE and Strong Hybrids, they do not have a play in the pure electric end. Hyundai and Kia have only ICE engines to offer, unless one counts the Kona. Hyundai's hybrid plans are -4 years away. For once the alert Koreans have been caught napping when the tide is turning strongly towards strong hybrids. MG becomes the only player in the segment to officer ICE, strong hybrid and Pure EV options in this segment.

The MG VS HEV sells for equivalent of INR 16 lakhs in Thailand. So if MG is able to bring in the HEV at around 15-16 lakhs, it could be a game changer in the mid-size strong hybrid SUV segment. There are only two players today (Grand Vitara and Hyryder) and both cost upwards of 19 lakhs ex-showroom. Within MG's own price corridor the entry level ZS (Astor) starts at 9.99 lakhs and the entry level ZS pre EV VE starts at 19 lakhs, leaving a huge 9 lakh gap, there the hybrid can slot in nicely in the middle. If MG manages this, you are looking at getting a powerful, sophisticated strong hybrid car at the price of a Sonet or Venue which are one segment lower and do not offer the space, convenience, power or fuel economy of a ZS HEV.

One of the complaints about the Hyryder and Grand Vitara hybrids is the weak powertrain. These cars struggle under strong acceleration and all one gets is the noise. This is because of the weak engines on offer and the ultra-small 0.7 KWHr batteries which can only help with short bursts of power before they lose steam run out. The ZS HEV on the other hand has a battery triple the size (2.2 KWHr) as well as more power from the ICE engine (110 PS versus 93 PS) that enables the car to reach 0-100 acceleration time of 8.5 seconds versus 12.1 seconds for the Hyryder. The only penalty is that the ZS HEV delivers a little lower fuel efficiency by about 10% as compared to the Hyryder. I would be OK with that for much better every day driving experience, with enough power on tap for both city and highway use.

Here is a comparison of the powertrains of the Hyryder versus that of the MG VS HEV:

But ground clearance of 145mm is low as per SUV standards, we need at least 170mm.

That's the laden height - 145 mm.

The laden height is the height of the vehicle when fully loaded, typically resulting in a lower height due to suspension compression, while the unladen height is the height of the vehicle when it is empty and without additional weight.
