Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam-photo20240522170927.jpg

Received this today on WhatsApp.

Most notifications happen on SMS. This car is used by my wife and in her words "You would be most impressed if I got a speeding fine"

This had a very dodgy apk file attached to it. I checked the Vahan portal and the car had no fine pertaining to it.

The leak must have happened at RTO, Dealer, Fasttag agent or insurance. Have blocked and reported this

re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

When did our RTO 'regretted' to inform about the violation and fine. They are happy to increase the state revenue

But I sincerely wish RTO folks 'learn' the polite tone of scammers and ready to share the evidence

Jokes apart, this APK attachments are dangerous as many will click without thinking and it may be an application to take control of the phone by the scammers.

Re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

While I haven't received toll / vehicle fine scam texts as elaborate as the original post, I receive plenty of scam / phishing texts since I came to Australia where I don't even own a car!

Re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

My first challan in MH looked like a scam. The message came nearly a year after I travelled.

I went to the site and confirmed it was real

Re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

It is quite unprofessional for Karnataka RTO to put a baby's photo as DP:

Sending APK files seems to be a popular strategy. I got this message:

I called up ICICIBank begging them not to "lodablock" my account.

I do not have any screenshots at the moment as I keep deleting such messages, but on a slightly different topic related to car - I keep getting some calls for loan that goes as follow:
Quote:
Loan Lady: "Hello Sir! Aapke paas Verna car hai, right? (You own a Verna, right?)"

Me: Yes, I do.

Loan Lady: To sir hum aapko Verna lene ke liye 15 lakh ka loan de rahe hai. Aapko chahiye? (So, we are offering you 15 lakhs to buy Verna. Are you interested?)

I guess they purposely misspell to evade auto spam detection features / key words.

The message from the Traffic Dept will not come from any personal number as displayed here. We need to be careful of that too. It will generally come as a text display for e.g. VM-VAHAN etc

Ditto.

I also received the same on the same day and for the same date and the missus was driving.

In my case, my wife was driving through NICE road, so I had a slight doubt, So I checked this across Bangalore-One and the Traffic police website, confirming that it was actually a fraud.
message that I received on WhatsApp.

On the day this message was sent, it had the Government of Karnataka logo in DP.

Regret, please, sincerely, will provide you with detailed information...

If anything these are enough to know this is fake. And a whatsapp message to boot.

Re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

I, too, received a spam call about 4 days back from fake DHL, insisting that a parcel sent to me contained "prohibitive substances" and if I wanted it I should give them some money.

I just said, why would I want a parcel that has "prohibitive stuff in it"?, told them to keep it and use it for themselves or call the authorities, hatch a plan and catch this sender, who is sending such "prohibitive parcels" to random people.

Never received a call again.

Re: Fraud Alert - Fake speeding violation phishing scam

I received 2 apk files from 2 unknown senders - one from a mobile number with a DP of Canara Bank and another from another mobile number with DP of Customer Care. Bottom line is never click on the links and install the files. Just use the block and report feature in whatsapp.

Yup, I get these literally every single day. This and some scam about a postal package not being delivered because they couldn't find my address. Sometimes, I share the address or phone number of a nearby police station just out of pettiness.
