Crash tests to become mandatory for all vehicles - Automobiles - Auto - News By Industry - News - The Economic Times Excerpt from the article
NEW DELHI: C-R-A-S-H. It may mean the end of the road for many cars, post-2008. Stringent tests are on the cards, and several popular car models are in danger of being phased out, unless they go in for major technology upgradations.
Maruti 800, Esteem, Versa, Omni, Ford Ikon and the half-a-century-old Ambassador, in their present form, are likely to fail the proposed crash tests. These together sell around 2-2.2 lakh units annually, with the M800 selling the most — 6,000 units a month.
The Maruti spokesperson declined comment.
Very good move by the policy makers, this should have been mandated earlier, I dont know what was stopping them.
But anyways better late than never.
Thats a good move in mandating safety. Wonder if the Tata i lakh car will pass this test.
Nice bit of news! I'll relish watching the manufacturers hop, skip and jump at working towards this mandate. And its a pro-consumer move too.
prskumar, you are right. I just forgot the 1 Lakh car from Tata. That will be the worst hit if this goes through. How on earth will they provide it close to 1 Lakh with Crash test too.

Ratan Tata, in his interview on CNBC about 2 weeks back, mentioned that the 1 lakh car will satisfy all the safety requirements that the current cars manufactured by Tata satisfy.

These are typical statements from any corporate. If you observe that last sentence

, you'll notice it can be interpreted in many ways. Therefore, until Tata confirms explicitly that its 1 lakh car
is crash-certified, its safe to assume it is not.
But I was under the impression that @ ARAI, all cars being released in India need to undergo CRASH test before launch. Is it not the case ? Wonder which cars are "ONLY" tested there ?
Fantastic bit of news! The government seems to have finally woken up to road safety. It is a baby step, but significant all the same. Lets hope that the crash tests are stringent and not another gimmick. Prices will rise in short term, but things should even out once the manufacturers find efficient yet economic ways to make safer cars.
Excellent news if this is really going to be the case !! As a next step, the government should also consider making ABS and airbags mandatory in all cars above B+ segments.

A welcome move atlast by the Govt, hats-off to those who made the decision and hope and wish they stand by it.
this is a good start to better road safety.
I want ARAI to put the crash videos on net. Also they should broadcast on TV, so that people can realize what an accident can do them.
Now it would be interesting to see which car makers offer the safest cars. Lets hope this leads to fewer deaths on our roads.
One thing though, would this also mean they will include pedestrian impact safety tests?
Crash testing need not be an expensive affair. Manufacturers just need to give their cars to CALL CENTRE cab drivers.
