Nissan’s Duster-based mid-size SUV to launch in FY2026

Nissan has confirmed that a new C-segment SUV based on the new Renault Duster will be launched in India in FY2026. It might not use the ‘Terrano’ nametag this time around. A 7-seater version will be introduced by the end of the same fiscal.

Nissan has also released renderings of the upcoming midsize SUV. While its silhouette appears similar to the Duster, it does have a unique front fascia. Nissan’s version will get sleek L-shaped LED DRLs connected by an LED light bar, a simple, horizontal grille with the Nissan logo in the centre and thin chrome strips on either side, as well as chunky silver inserts on the front bumper.

Nissan hasn’t shared any details of the SUV’s interior. However, it is expected to be similar to the Duster and might come equipped with more features. The new mid-size SUV could get a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera and automatic climate control with rear AC vents.

The new C-segment SUV will be offered a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine at launch. This unit is said to produce 152 BHP and 250 Nm and will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Features like all-wheel drive and ADAS are likely to be offered on select variants sold in the international market.

The upcoming Nissan midsize SUV will compete with models like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Skoda Kushaq.

Just 100k in targets annually in both export and domestic markets. Something tells me this will be priced poorly and will struggle to sell even a 3rd of that number domestic annually.

I think 100k units is actually quite a realistic target for a carmaker the size of Nissan in India. If we take around 30k units for export, 70k units a year domestic is some 5800 odd monthly units. Which if you look at the the sales of similar rivals like the VW Twins and Honda Elevate will even make you think it’s a bit ambitious. For that matter, even the Kia Seltos sits in the same range.

If this new Nissan SUV is really based on the Dacia Duster, shouldn't it be considered a B-segment vehicle like the rest of the world? The low-cost alternative for the C-segment should be based on the Dacia Bigster, which will even have a Renault derivative (possibly Boreal) with its own look being manufactured in Brazil.
