Re: The Car that changed you – Not just your drive

2010 Ford Figo 1.2L petrol - This car has been with me for 15 years now. Its a part of my ecosystem and is family. Scores of memories with this amazing piece of machinery. Never failed me on highways, city anywhere. Have absolutely no reason to part ways with it. This will always be with me forever! This car has thought me patience!

2012 Renault Duster RxL 110 VGT

Until then, I had only owned small petrol hatchbacks — a 2004 WagonR and a 2007 Swift VXi. I went for a test drive of the Duster, and it was the first turbo diesel I had ever driven.
I was blown away by the surge of torque once it hit the power band — it was completely unexpected. I ended up booking it the same day.

While I was still waiting for delivery of my RxL 110, I went back and test-drove the RxE 85 BHP version as well, but it didn’t leave the same impression.

I still have that car with me to this day and the pic is there in my t-bhp profile.

I’ve never felt the same excitement with any other car I’ve owned or test-driven since.

Re: The Car that changed you – Not just your drive

Ford Freestyle diesel

This is the first time I ever drive one of the Figo trios with the 1.5 TDCi. Even though I had driven cars with the 1.5 TDCi plenty of times, including the Global Fiesta and the EcoSport, both those cars were either heavy or had lower states of tune (compared to the Figo trio), so the experience wasn't anything to write home about.

I had similar expectations in early 2019 when I took the wheel of my friend's Freestyle T+ diesel during a long drive (more than 800 kms). It was unexpected really, I thought this car would also be a bit dull and hence for the first 50 kms my friend drove the car until unfortunately he twisted his ankle during a refreshment stop, so I had to take the wheel. The moment I took the car back onto the highways, I realised that I was dealing with a completely different ANIMAL. And for the entirety of the rest of the drive, I was grinning from ear to ear, SMOKING cars that cost 4-5 times more than the Freestyle.

From that point onwards, I became a massive fan of the 1.5 TDCi, eventually culminating in me purchasing my current primary car - a Ford Figo Aspire Titanium diesel, from a contact of mine. It doesn't have many features, and since it is a pre-facelift model, it doesn't even have as many features as my friend's Freestyle T+. But the moment I switch on the car and get on the road, all of my complaints fade away. The engine is THAT good.

And all of this while being ridiculously cheap to maintain, even lesser than my friend's Swift Dzire diesel.

Ertiga
Gen1, diesel, probably the base/lxi variant

The year is 2017. It's been a year of my 1st car ownership. Back then I wasn't much into cars, definitely not into mpv. But an uber ride changed everything.

Re: The Car that changed you – Not just your drive

I think a lot of people are responding in terms of the change of how they drove the cars. But as a person, I think my very first car that I owned and drove changed me- the humble 1987 Honda Civic 1.5 NA in the USA, back in 1999. Driving a vehicle changes lots of perspectives in a person. And owning your first vehicle in a ' disciplined' road faring environment like US changes it multifold. From being too cautious and failing my first DL test , taking up driving lessons from a "South Asian" origin middle aged aunty teacher (who admired the decency of "Bombay Poona" men compared to Lahore) , learning from her to hesitate while merging and exiting freeways, keeping myself 'ticket free' in terms of speeds, was a big deal. And I did all of that in a fairly diminutive (for its vintage) but reliable car like the Civic. And it made me a responsible roadster to this day.

Re: The Car that changed you – Not just your drive

For me, it has to be the Ford Figo 1.5 TDCi ! Bought in 2019 and I still own it proudly. My daughter was 1 year old at the time and it was beginning of a new phase in life and that made this ownership very special. I have some fabulous memories with this vehicle.
It completely changed my perception of car ownership. For me a car used to be a utility. But with Ford Figo, it became an emotion.
Its a pocket rocket for a reason. The ride and handling amazes me till date. 1.5 TDCi engine is a class apart. I wish Ford had stayed in the Indian market. In that case, Endeavor would have been my next car.
Even after India exit, Ford's service experience is wonderful to say the least. No drama no non-sense. I get what I ask for and more.

Re: The Car that changed you – Not just your drive

For me It all started when I was a school going guy, back in 26th March 2006, when my father bought our very 1st car Maruti Suzuki Alto LXI in wine red colour. It was the same time when Alto was declared as 5 seater car officially.
This car has made me learn to take over responsibility of life as we grow up. Starting from gradually change in primary driver from my father to me as soon as I completed my 18 years. Many other transition followed as time passed.
Fast forward to 2013 when we thought to upgrade to a safer car. The feeling of not detaching Alto from our family made the new car decision more and more tuff as we do not have a car parking for more than one car. Soon we got a buyer for our Alto which was non other than my cousin who resides just a couple of KM from my house. This was a better option any day as I could see and drive the car whenever I feel so.

Came in 2014, when we bought our 2nd car. Hyundai i20 1.2 Asta Petrol in White colour.
The Journey began, over the years what I have learned from i20 is that even though you might not be perfect in all the aspect of your life, the ultimate goal is to give your best till the last shot.

This relates in a way that, even I know the i20 might not be a good highway handler, the 1.2 might be under powered, though it might not be fuel efficient and few more but the memories it has given till date has created a long lasting impression when it comes to commitment.
While writing this my car has covered 1.24 lakhs on the ODO, it still stands strong and has never put us stranded or in any sort of unwelcoming situation. It has always taken the best possible care on wheels many a times far-far away from home.
Quite few times my car had shown some problem only when we have reached home. But never in the middle of any Journey.
Such is the commitment I see and trying to inherit the same in me.

11 years completed so far with my i20, and the new car feeling is creeping in my mind for a long time now. However I will not buy a new car at the cost of selling my i20.
I know my next car will be either Virtus or Slavia in 1.5.
The new car can wait but parting ways with my i20 will not be the option.
It is a special family member and I might sound crazy but I feel the car talks with me. I feel it has a soul!
