I am not sure about such a reservation on the 1.9MJD. I think it is offered as an option on the Suzuki grandvitara, in European markets. Not too sure, though.

Both the 1.6 and 1.9 MJD engines are offered on the SX4 internationally. Look up Fiat MJD on wikipedia - provides a list of cars in which its used.

1.6 is Suzuki's engine whereas 1.9 MJD is Fiat's engine. The 1.9 MJD on offer in SX4/Sedici is the 8v 120 bhp engine, which Fiat is planning to phase out in favour of its 1.6 16v JTD which pumps in identical number of horses. 1.9 will only be sold in 16v tune (both single turbo with 150 horses and bi-turbo with 170 and 180 horses). I have no idea whether the 16v 1.9 engines will be offered on Suzuki cars too, though the Opel I guess will have them.

Phasing out MJD in favour of JTD ? Shouldn't it be the otherway ?

Pal, MJD and JTD are same, you can call it by either name.

As Finney says, I am using those names interchangeably.

How? JTD 1.6 has more to do with Fiat than Suzuki, if at all (through the GM link).

From a reliable source, I heard that Palio 1.3 MJD is coming up in March 2nd week and the Linea during this August.

- Karthik.

Oh I hope so. It'll be the end of an agonising wait. Atleast we can compare the Swift DDiS to it then instead of just speculating.

OK. Sorry for the confusion. SX4 internationally has a 1.6 petrol engine which is Suzuki's and 1.9 JTD which is Fiat's. The 1.6 I was referring to in terms of SX4 was the petrol engine.

I don't see a point of placing a new engine between a 1.2 and 1.6. I think this introduction is purely to compete with Swift and Getz.

Now, Palio will have 1.1,1.2, 1.3 and 1.6. Shouldn't they be thinking of filling the gaps?lol:

I dont think there is a 1.2 Palio now,
Waiting for 1.3 multijet.Hope there is some new stuff in car's interiors.

Even after the launch of the Fiat, the Swift DDIS will be unaffected, Fiat targets only 500 units a month.

Right now Swift DDiS has no competition(Indica is actually no competition engine wise), so you are at dealers mercy about delivery.
Having a completing Palio would be a good thing.
But if Tata had put this engine in Indica instead, they would have commanded much more than 500 unit sale increase.
One of the major drawbacks of indica(apart from taxi image of course) is the unrefined crude engine(even DICOR is crude by DDiS standards).

Anyways, its a month long wait, and the market will tell whether it will accept Palio in the diesel avatar.

Technically they are not. But then I don't want to argue. Using the right name is important because Fiat would not put JTD engines on its new cars. Just like Honda wouldn't do with vtec over i-vtec.

Can you imagine the opportunity that Hyundai had with the diesel Getz? If only it was priced at par with the Swift (or at a marginal premium).

I think the guys that decided on the Getz pricing were on Maruti's payroll.

After Subbu went Hyundai has somewhat lost the way.
It was hyundai that brought Maruti to its knees with the santro.
From being pioneers in the market(Santro was the herald of tall boy monstrosities) they have become also ran.
Tata Fiat alliance has a fighting chance.
They will first field the Palio MJD, and follow it up with the next gen indica Q-jet.
I guess this engine is going to become the highest selling engine in the Indian market.

I think that award would go to Suzuki F10 D (Alto VXi, WagonR, Zen Esilo).
