Nope the placement isn't dictated by LHD or RHD (atleast in India it isn't). The European cars in India Skoda / Fiat etc. have the fuel lids on the RHS whereas the Jap and American cars have it on the LHS. Though this isn't the right way to put the point across, are we safe to assume that the fuel tank lid placement is more to do with the country it is designed for? Like when a car is for European markets the fuel lid is placed on the RHS and for the Jap markets on the LHS, etc?

Lucky for you it has 2 exhaust pipes as well, as do all Beetles after 55. But they had the fillers and tanks up front under the hood:D
Teri toh. Vintages defy all rules of design :). They had the right to put whatever component wherever they felt it deemed fit.
