Bhp/ton is the universal element of performance. A high performance car has to have a high bhp/ton ratio but, not all cars with high bhp/ton ratios end up as perfomance cars.

There a many other factors that can affect performance. Gear ratios, rolling friction, mechanical friction, mode of transmission (M/T, A/T or CVT) and drag coefficient.

Even if 2 cars with the exact dimenssional, frictional and aerodynamical specifications are raced against each other, let us also take into consideration that both cars have the same engine capacity, power and torque........they still maynot have similar performance characteristics.

This is bcos, even though they both produce similar power and torque figures, at what rpm this power and torque is produced will make a diff.

The Baleno is less powerful than the Vtec but they have the exact torque figure of 132nm. Inspite of that, a simple roll on test will show you that the baleno has better pulling power from low rpms than the Vtec, why? That's bcos the Baleno produces it's peak torque at a much lower rpm than the Vtec's 4700 revvs.

But, torque at low rpm does not equate to high power, which is why, the Vtec produces more power than the Baleno.

So, your car's bhp/ton ratio will help it's performance provided all the other elements support it.

Skoda 1.9 TDI is missing from the list. Since the Skoda 2.0 is in the 80-90 column I would figure the 1.9TDI is even lower! :Shockked:

and ofcourse all are manual gears , A/T means extra weight except crv

If you want a car for city driving them go in for a diesel. You'll get loads of torque at very low rpms.

Diesels are starting to make more sense day by day, their engine character just suits city driving better.

Yeah, you are right, but the latest gen turbo diesels give nearly as much fun as the petrols. (Check out the BMW 740d for example - 300bhp and 71KgM of torque). And some of these cars will be coming to India (Swift JTD is the one I am really waiting for).

To answer the question stated in the title....an astounding YES!

Hi, yes it does ! Ever wondered why a small motor bike with just about 8-14 bhp, is quicker in cities and faster ( over a small stretch ) than 100+bhp's cars?

This is off topic, but as a joke, another thing we tend to ignore while modifying is the Rs/BHP ,lol: and go for things like NGK Sparks etc...

Yep I guess BHP/Ton it makes sense, but only in combintation with Torque/Ton, and Rpm figures at which top BHP and torque are achieved.

Where you put Ford fiesta 1.4 TDCI, Bhp per tonne is too low, but the car is not that bad to drive!

BHP/Ton gives you a general idea about the acceleration abilities of the car.
