Tata will not stay back at Singur as far as I am concerned. They very well know about the consequences once if the same agitation comes after setting up the entire plant. If the shifting is now estimated @ 350 crores, it will be more than triple once they set up the entire plant.

Tata is waiting for their turn and they will charge up, the moment they confirm about the alternatives

Breaking News - Mamata, CM make peace; reach solution on Singur

Beating all scepticism, sense have prevailed and TATA Nano Singur project is on. Win - win for everybody, farmers, industrialists and of course politicians. Also this crisis has made Nano famous worldwide. One more fact is that it proves WB wants industry as any other state, just getting their act wrong and this is a mighty positive step ahead. In the end, alls well that ends well!!!

Cheers

This is certainly good news. But in all this incident what did MB get from all this? Tata's definately has made Plan B ready by now. And they will stick to their Plan B as they do not want to get their plant shut down due to strikes by unions once it becomes operational. Eg: If they are producing around 1Lac cars/annum we can expect only around 25% of the output from Singur balance will come from other plants.

now the interestimng part is how that 230 acres get to farmers. now how many of the farmers want the agri land versus the land in the plant area?

how fair is to ones who get the complex land in comparison who get agri land

I have no clue what is it the oppn party gained from this. If I am right, where is the land from the plant? TATA said they want all 1000s right? Again, a wait and watch episode.

the latest report on rediff says 300 acres from within the plant Singur row resolved; Tatas to give land

If this 300 acres is given off from within the plant complex area...where do the planned setups for that 300 acres go?

or for all we know in a win win for all concerned politicians the total land for project expands by 300 acres and project stays for left's sake and farmers get 300 acres within plant for Mamta's sake .

Seems not all is well. Tata's are having their own doubt and have not yet resumed work. This is what I read now.

Tata unhappy with deal on Singur row

KOLKATA: Tata Motors have said that the deal on Nano project in Singur lacks clarity.

The Tatas said, “We will continue to suspend work there".

Earlier on Monday, no employee of Tata Motors or its contractors entered the factory in Singur, the day after an agreement was reached to lift the siege on it.

The factory in West Bengal Hooghly district is about 40 km from here.

West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi had on Sunday mediated a pact between main opposition Trinamool Congress and the state government over the disputed farmland acquired for the project....

Which sane business house will continue to operate in that state under these circumstances?. Another committee has been formed to deal with the modalities and we all know the way of the 'committee'. Remember the fall of the Soviet state?.

Sounds more like a very large extortion racket to get compensation + industrial land. I'd really like to see how many of them actually take agricultural land for all the noise created about farmland.

True. It would be very very interesting to see how the distribution of land back to the 'farmers' happen and, lets say at the end of 1 year (provided TATA is still there), what there 'farmers' are 'farming' in these lands.

Wouldn't be surprised if a multi-storied building has been grown!

There was this article about the Singur problem in yesterday's Deccan Chronicle (Chennai-edition), titled "Small car leads to big Bengal role reversal - BY PARWEZ HAFEEZ, KOLKATA". The following is taken from that article :

"Singur is in Hooghly district, 45 kilometres from Kolkata. The six villages whose land falls under the Tata project site are Gopal Nagar, Bera Beri, Bajemelia, Khaserbheri, Singher Beri and Joymollar Beri. Over 80 per cent land there is irrigated and paddy, potato, jute and vegetables are grown in the area."

Industrial development is a good thing and does wonders for the economy and the people in the area. But should it be at the cost of fertile land that is being cultivated ? Was it that difficult for the Govt to identify barren land (there is hectares of that kind in India and in WB) which could have been given for the project ?

While cars, especially a small and FE one is welcome, IMO fertile agricultural land should not be sacrificed for it.

This deal has certainly hit West Bengal's industrial growth. Heard on NDTV that Infosys is also reconsidering its expansion plans in West Bengal. Not good!

Tatas shocked by Singur deal; to suspend work
September 8, 2008

Miffed at not being consulted before West Bengal government reached a settlement with Trinamool Congress's Mamata Banerjee, Tatas could pull out from Singur as they feel that return of any portion of land would make the project to manufacture the world's cheapest car unviable.
Groping in the dark about details of the settlement, which the state government had not communicated to them till late afternoon, the corporate house said on Monday: "Tata Motors is distressed at the limited clarity on the outcome."
Tata Motors said it would not resume work on its small-car plant in Singur, claiming that the outcome of talks between the government and opposition parties to end protests against the project lacked clarity.
"Tata Motors is distressed at the limited clarity on the outcome of the discussions between the state government and the representatives of the agitators in Singur," a statement issued by the company said.
At the end of talks mediated by West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi yesterday, an official statement said that the government would respond to the demands of those farmers who have not received compensation and asked vendors of Tata Motors not to go ahead with construction of their respective facilities in the meantime.
The company said that it would review its stated position only if it was satisfied that the viability of the project was not being impinged.
Yours Truly
The Nano's sad saga continues.
