Hi

The estimate is nearly half of the value of your car. Would appreciate if you could post the break up.

amit

Shashank, thats an astronomical quote! As the others have mentioned, put up the breakup, and members would analyse whether they are trying to rip you off or not.

Sad to hear about your car , but do post the estimate that they have given you , in all likelyhood instead of salvaging as far as possible the A.S.S guys would have listed them for replacement as someone has already pointed out earlier ...and the high estimate almost makes the car look like a typical case for claiming total loss which shouldnt be the case at all....

Man, this is ridiculous, in such a situation, all that warrants is the cost of engine + few accessories that might've got harmed beacuse of water.

Is Civic's engine that expensive?

They must've given a bill of material also along, could you please publish that also.
I am sure Insurance won't cover all the items.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal agentsmit2. It's one of those things which you possibly can't help no matter how much you wanted to. A friend of mine suffered almost the same fate in his baleno. Water entered the engine through the air-filter and boom he was dished out an estimate of 1.5L and counting. This is after he had extended warranty and insurance, neither of which came to his rescue.
All he did was, move the car out of the dealer, handed it over to a local mechanic and his car was repaired in 25K. So far, his car is working just fine.
What I would suggest is, in case, the insurance doesn't work out for you, try getting the car repaired from a local mechanic you trust. I'm sure your estimate would come down to around 50-70K or thereabouts.
All the best
M2S

Thanks for the reply people! Appreciate it.

The A.S.S. guy hasn't given the bill-of-materials yet. This estimate has been sent to the Insurance guys who are now evaluating it to see if they can approve it or not. What caught my goat was that apparently the bill includes changing the steering wheel as well.

Steering Wheel? and the car wasnt even flooded enough to let the water in. So no upholstries, no seat covers damaged, all electronics was working fine [dashboard etc]. The water didn't enter engine compartment at all - no frothy oil of any kind. Only the airfilter showed traces of water.

The bill of material will be faxed monday now.

Does anyone know a good workshop in Pune for Honda ?

They plan on changing the door latches, carpet set, etc. No wonder they have managed to run up such a crazy figure! As for the other items, will wait for the others to comment.

Thats exactly the first thing I noticed. 25k for door latches. 4k for carpets. A few grand more for speakers. Hmmm. I don't know man, I think you should scrutinize this list and maybe get a few opinions from a trusted mech or knowledgeable folks from tbhp before going ahead with this. You know, just to make sure everything listen is actually required to be replaced.

And there's about 1 lac for various stuff like ABS and airbag module. Why does that need changing.

I believe a faulty ABS system will not work, a half dead ABS & Airbag module are even worse, there have been accidents where the driver was taken by surprise upon the air bag activation and could not see the road, compounding the accident.

cheers

Water entry causing faulty Air bag activation ?

Thats what i mean, the systems may not be faulty after all a little bit of water cannot damage parts of the car, other than the engine of course.

The estimate is CRAP CRAP CRAP

If i was there, i would have removed the valve cover and the head and cleaned the engine, and it would we good as new!

Once again - CRAP
For example, why does Exhaust pipe need to be replaced? thats stupid

Yes, i understand some parts were wet, and this may effect the long run, but it doesnt mean they are damaged or destroyed. Open the bonnet and leave it in sun for 2 days. Let the things dry up first.

The only thing i am worried about is that the ECU may have been fried up - thats about it.

Like i told you earlier on PM, look for the word "hydrolock, honda, civic" on google.
Also start searching on dedicated Civic Forums about this and post your story.
There are "proper" honda civic experts hanging around on the US based forums. They can give you right information.

After all, your car was running fine until the very last minute! Everything cannot be destroyed immediately, all at once.

The dealer quote seems to be - precautionary measure quote, in which they will assume and replace everything they feel may be bad.

That is a huge estimate. hope things work out well for you. I suppose this explains your wanting an SUV as your next car.
