Yes, you are right, partially.
My uncle who lived in Ernakulam in 1970s had a FIAT with KLC registration, which made me think KLC was for EKM.
But actually KLC was for Cannanore (Kannur) district and KLZ was for Kozhikode or Calicut :)

Dear Binaiks most of ST buses will have either MH12[PUNE] or MH 20[AURANGABAD] aurangabad are more in numbers, it seems they get some releief in registering them there in form of road taxes or octroi.

If my memory ic correct, KLZ was the 2nd series for Calicut. I could be wrong!!!!!

Uttranchal =UA , but has changed to Uttrakhnad=UK

The Buses are registered at the place where their Workshop is located. In case of MSRTC, its workshops (body building units) are located at Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur. This is why the buses are registered MH12, MH20 and MH40 respectively.

Volvo buses were registered in MH12 or MH11. The newer ones, which are hired, are registered MH04 (MH43, when it was the old operator).

As for the UP codes, I think 77 is Kanpur rural and 78 is Kanpur Urban.
I find it strange that so many n8 and n9 codes are missing and wonder if they are being held in reserve for future use????

May be for some states.In UP Lucknow being the capital has a code of UP-32.So i wonder in case its true for all other states also.

That is right. AP for instance goes by alphabetical order 01 - Adilabad, 02 - Anantapur etc. Hyd is 09-13

Also AP has the practice of not distinguishing Cars, 2W or Govt vehicles by different series.
Only Police vehicles have different series (AP 09 P xxxx), and this is true for AP 09 alone. Other zones P series is not Police.
RTC buses with Z. Commercial vehicles (yellow plates) from T - Y

Coming to KA,
all Govt vehicles including Police vehicles have the series G reserved.(All zones)
RTC buses (both BMTC and KSRTC) have F series.

2W - Series E
Cars from M - ?

i have recently seen quite a few cars sporting the number plates with black background and yellow numbers

whats does this signify??

These are private Taxi's.
Generally owned by big hotels and corporates to ferry there own guest.
