Suprise, Suprise, In a study conducted by the Automobile Research Association of India (ARAI) of 450 models available in the market, Tata's Nano has been declared as the most fuel efficient car.

Top 3 Petrol Cars
  1. Tata Nano - 23.6 km/ltr.
  2. Maruti Astar - 19.6 km/ltr.
  3. Maruti Alto/Hyundai i10 - 18.1 km/ltr.
Top 3 Diesel Cars
  1. Hyundai Verna - 21.9 km/ltr.
  2. Tata Indigo Dicor - 21.4 km/ltr.
  3. Maruti Swift - 21 km/ltr.

I'd be really interested to see some SUV/MUV rankings too. Although the economy probably wont be "the" deciding factor, it'll make for interesting reading. It may also help as a reference point to decide if the dealer/manufacturer quotes one figure, while a third party quotes another.

Would anyone have access to the complete list of 450 models rated by ARAI with their fuel efficiency figures ?

The figures would be "under standard test conditions" right?

ACI reported around 18kmpl in city and 20 on the highway. While this is decent, not as good as one would expect from such a light car run by a small engine which takes 30 secs to reach the top speed of 100 kms.
Technically if any of the small cars are tuned only for fuel efficiency (and can crawl to 0-100) there will be many cars which can achive this kind of FE.

Nano beats all...thats the power of Nano technology i guess.

To me the FE figures stated are all fake,i don't know when was the last time i got 12.5kmpl on my car :p and wonder where do they drive these cars to achieve such hansome FE figures

I am surprised as to how the Logan is not in the diesel fuel efficiency list.

its expected from a nifty 2 cylinder motor, not a surprise at all.

Take it as a measure of the order in which these cars figure, as far as the fuel efficiency is concerned, and not as the actual fuel efficiency that you can expect from these vehicles.

So you won't get 23.6 kmpl from you nano, much more than you get 18.1 kmpl from your i10.

Nevertheless, it's a positive start, and if all manufacturers embrace this, and advertise these figures instead of the ones found out by their internal testing or car/bike mags, the consumers are only going to benefit.

What's hard to swallow, however, is that verna crdi has pipped the swift DDiS in terms of fuel efficiency. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the figures on this forum almost universally contradict this fact, don't they?

And if the verna is so fuel efficient, how come the getz crdi doesn't figure in the same list ? GO FIGURE !!

and i can't believe that the indigo dicor beat the swift VDi in mileage!

What about Fiesta's claim around 25 KMPL????

Seem to be inconsistent, at least in comparison with the numbers that many owners have put up in the forum!

The ARAI fuel efficiency tests are based on some parameters that reflect real world conditions. IIRC, some of the points are:

1. Two people in the car
2. no AC
3. no ICE
4. Combined cycle of city-highway (don't remember the split).
5. Some other points.

While it is not the "Standard Test Conditions" FE (remember 100+ kpl for bikes?) but a more realistic one but with a strong effort towards keeping it frugal.

However, everybody faces different driving situations and has a different driving style.

Nevertheless, I am surprised to find that Verna Diesel is more fuel efficient than the Swift D. Even the Palio MJD gives better real world FE than Verna D, atleast in the city from what I have read here.

There are way to many variables for FE. These figures are indicative.

E.g. my Alto gives 9 - 10 kmpl in daily commute. But on highway runs it gives 20 - 22 kmpl. Both figures are with 100% AC.

These are two extreme conditions.

Daily commute involves car sitting in traffic jam for 15 - 20 mintues for a commute that lasts just 35 mins.

Highway run involves starting from Varje in Pune to Mumbai through expressway. Almost the whole stretch is covered in fifth gear and foot is off the clutch. I fill top up petrol at start and end of journey at measure actual FE.
