i have booked the Zxi Silver colour.
|
hey imjimmy- i have booked one in the same colour too....!!!!! that's one big coincidence..!!
and yes, regarding the straight line performace.... well, all have said and wrote regarding the same, so no point in pushing it further.... but the important thing is-the car's stability; it feels like you are doing 65 kmph in a swift, 125kmph in a baleno, and 150 kmph in an esteem, when the actual speed is 100 kmph, in all the three cars.(i think someone had mentioned this before...).
so, now that all is said and done about the stock engine, let's see some proper modded swifts ( and i see a lot of them in the horizon, unlike the gtx; which didn't require any mods, and also, was difficult to do so...) .

Dunno why but i get a little bit of clausterphobia on the back seat..

You did so because of the restricted glass area. Its a common complaint of the swift rear-benchers
GTO
what is the difference between kerb and gross weight? Kerb wt for Swift vxi is 1000kgs, but gross wt is mentioned as 1415 kgs in the brochure.
TIA
Simran
kerb = weight of the car on its own
gross = with people in it and luggage - ie real life situations......
Ok, so the gross wt mentioned is the max allowed?
If that is so, it seems Ok since 5 adults of 80 kgs each can sit, and we have 15kgs to spare.
Kerb Weight: Weight without fluids required for operation, but including driver and fuel weight. Also known as Dry Weight.
Gross Weight: Weight including fluids required for operation. Also includes driver, payload and fuel weight. Its also the maximum total weight permitted for the vehicle.

Rear seat Headroom:
I understand that dimensions of headroom dictate that it is lesser than the Indica/Palio.
Rear seat Shoulder width:
Dimensionally the car is wider than both Indica and Palio .. However all reports experiences seem to indicate that shoulder room is lesser. Is this just a 'feeling' due to the small windows ? Or is this body tapered too much towards the roof ?
Rear seat Legroom:
Doesn't the front seats slide back a long way in the Swift. I think I read 240mm somewhere. Could that also contribute to the feeling of lesser legroom ? I'm not sure how much the Indica seat goes back, but it does quite a bit. I'm 6"1' and still don't need to push it back all the way (in an Indica). How much would be the legroom in the Swift if the front seats are not pushed back all the way ?
Rear seat legroom:
The Swift front seat goes back a little too much in my opinion. When pushed completely back, there is very little legroom for the rear seat passenger. This way, it is great for exceptionally tall people who need to store only shopping bags in the rear seat.
My Indica driver's seat is pushed all the way back (I'm 5' 10" but have long legs!) and there is still considerable legroom in the right rear seat. Not as much as an Indigo but you get the drift!

Can someone plz tell me if Swift has a SOHC or a DOHC engine.
In the OD roadtest - it's written DOHC , 4 Valves/cyl.. Also i read a review on mouthshut.com where a guy harped on the same.
So was this a misprint or is it really a DOHC - considering the Esteem's engine was a SOHC.
Sorry if the question is mundane, i am not much into the engine tech..
Thanks,
Swift has the same Esteem SOHC block
hmmm... even i think Swift is DOHC..

The swift specs in the OD June issue mentions DOHC
Ok..here goes finally test drove a Swift for about 8-10 kms and here's my impression...
LOOKS
*****
Unlike the Getz you ain't caught in between two worlds. With the Swift you either love it's looks or don't like it("hate" might be too strong). And I love it...looks a big radical but it's a big leap from those bland designs Maruti was churning out. Muscular fenders, the short overhangs, the headlights and tail lamps look cool. The tires are one of the largest on any hatch and fill out the wheel wells pretty good.
PERFORMANCE
***********
I felt that the Swift was a strong performer and switching the AC on and off didn't bring about any perceptible difference in performance. This ain't as perky as the zen or my beloved 5 speed M800 but it isn't no slouch either. Handling is also very good compared to the Getz but the height takes it's toll. However I felt that the low end torque was not so good and I feel that this might result in more low gear operation in the city. The gear shift is pretty smooth and has a short throw. The ride is pretty decent but a touch on the stiffer side. Maybe this is the price to pay for good handling.
CABIN
*****
This is one area where the Getz is better in terms of a more airy cabin and a feeling of more space. May I stress on "feeling" cos I has a 6' friend of mime try out the back seat with the front passenger seat adjusted for me(5'11') and the leg room at the back was still pretty good. Though the under thigh support could be better. Overall I think the getz has an edge here. The front seats are great, very supportive and the driving position is good. Boot space is one weak point and anyone of keeping a subwoofer here better forget about much space left over.
One word though - I absolutely feel Maruti should feel ashamed at not providing mud flaps and floor mats as standard. This is too bad especially with the rains setting in.
Overall I feel pretty good about the car and feel it is a great compromise between performance and practical comfort. I feel it is more driver centric which I love but without loosing too much in passenger comfort at the same time.
I would gladly plonk my money for this car if I was in the market for one but it's still my 5 Speed. Funny I feel nothing comes close but I think that is seriously biased so I have stopped comparing my test rides with my current ride. They somehow just don't match up!!:-D
Drive on,
Shibu
OKIES :-)
MY review of the Swift. took a test drive just a couple of hours back. I'll kind of stick to the format shibujp has used, so its easier.
Model driven was Vxi without ABS. colour - burnt orange.
LOOKS:
Definitely eye-catching as of now because we really do not have anything styled along those lines. Personally I find it too curvy for my tastes. I like the flared wheel arches though. My take on the looks is that, the SWIFT is like one of those new remixes that you enjoy tremendously when it releases and you like to listen to it over and over again. but then after a month or so, it turns you off. Of course, this is my personal opinion based on what turns me on and off. To each his/her own.
BUILD QUALITY:
Quite good, but would have liked tighter shut lines. Paint Quality not impressive as far as I am concerned, typical maruti. Doors shut with a good thunk though. Its definitely sturdier than your run of the mill Maruti. I was quite disgusted with the rubber lining used on the windows, which was already pulling off. Exposed Rubber lining ??? That is cheap.
PERFORMANCE : ACCELERATION
Frankly, average. not bad, at the same time not exciting too. just about does the job. its definitely not going to set the tracks on fire. but just right for city driving.
PERFORMANCE : CRUISING
I feel steady 130 kmph or maybe even 120 kmph cruises with a full complement of passengers might not be particularly pleasant. Engine might be harsh and straining You might not be left with much of reserve power.
however, as above, quite adequate for city driving.
PERFORMANCE : LOW END TORQUE
I might differ here with the previous review. I thought it was just about ok. if driven carefully and knowing the limitations, you could get away with fewer gear changes. i might be wrong though. though positively nowhere as good as the Palio Diesel.
BRAKING:
I did not drive the one with ABS. Still came away quite impressed with the braking. Sure and confidence inspiring with plenty of bite.
TRANSMISSION:
Gear is stiff though slots in perfectly. Stiffness can be put down to it being a new vehicle I guess. Shifting on the whole is fun. Gear shift is perfectly proportioned and positioned with respect to driver sitting position. Clutch is smooth, typical of any Maruti / Suzuki and effortless. But no space to the left of the clutch. More on this below.
PERFORMANCE : HANDLING
I was expecting bit of roll but it was nowhere as much as I expected. So quite OK. Overall ride quality about what I expected.
DRIVER ZONE / COCKPIT :
Cool. Fun place to be. Ergonomics very good typical Maruti with everything at the right distance and angle. Instrumentation well laid out. Not particularly impressed with the black dashboard on the ZXI. would have definitely expected / wanted something better at least for the ZXI. was not too impressed with the AC vents/louvres positioning and angles. handrest on the door was perfectly positioned.
However, as mentioned above, no space to the left of the clutch. I was wearing floaters and my leg just would not slot in to the side. Would be worse with shoes. Thats a MAJOR piss off for me. A big dampener on driving pleasure and comfort, especially in stop and go traffic. This is surprising since this kind of attention to ergonomics is usually where Maruti excels.
AIR CONDITIONING:
Adequate. Did not seem to sap too much of power I *think*. But then, I did most of the test drive with the AC off. And no idea on the "Automatic Climate Control" thingy on the ZXI.
CABIN NOISE:
Significantly higher than expected. Dunno if its suspension noise, due to the wheels or what. Somebody better qualified can throw light on this.
SEATING FRONT:
As mentioned above, sitting position very good. Good all round visibility. Nice place to be in.
SEATING REAR:
This is where I differ mainly with the previous review. As far as I am concerned, the back seat of the Swift is where you seat your enemies. It is a bloody bench. a baakda. Flat. No incline. No support. Narrow. No space.
I read in Overdrive or Autocar (forget which) about how it has been designed by Indian engineers and how indians know all about seating comfort...blah...blah..... Well, looks like all their effort went into the 60:40 split seats which are not available here. This is a baakda sourced from the same people who build them for the roadside dhaabas and cutting chaiwaalas. And cushioning done by "A1 Mattress Store".
Additionally, the high windows with the cramped rear makes it really claustrophobic.
Single most significant factor that puts me off the Swift.
And, just for perspective, I am average Indian height, 5'10 and the tallest in my family.
BOOT SPACE:
What ? where ? None to review. the less said the better. given the cramped rear seating, i was expecting something here, but no respite here too. like mentioned in the previous review, a pair of big speakers / subs and thats it.
MY VERDICT:
Perfect for a couple or someone who knows the rear seats will not be used much. Definitely a no-no for me or for anyone who knows the rear seats will be put to good use by loved ones and family, especially elderly people.
At 5.58 lacs for the ZXI, definitely not value for money. But at 4.5ish for the VXI without ABS or the base version, sounds OK I guess, if you don't mind the absence of a whole lot of other goodies.
