I've recently read about the Toyota 1-N G1 TDI engines being retrofitted in some of our older cars like the Amby, Maruti 1000 and the Daewoo Cielo.. Apparently, the engine is a hit with the Maruti Gypsy vehicles..

I am curious to know if any of my auto-enthusiast friends have heard about it..

Yea, Ive seen a few Diesel converted Cielos, guess this lump is what they put in them.

You've mentioned a mix of FWD and RWD vehicles, so it cant be the same identical engine. Do you know which Toyota vehicle it came out of.

Nope unfortunately, All i know is that the engine is distributed from Mumbai and Chennai to various parts of the country.. I am guessing that the engine comes by sea-route and is probably being imported (read dumped or smuggled) by countries that have stricter emission norms..

The engine was designed by Toyota and outsourced to Isuzu.. The engine is being manufactured by Isuzu..
