Well Bajaj, Hyundai, Ford etc have already done it. Maruti is following the trend. Why take any tension? Do we need to continue this discussion?
The forum is trying to fathom out the future of next generation engines and future car market in India in general. IMHO it is not tension but the brain stimulus for the very pupose of auto interactive kowledgebase this forum(T-Bhp) is founded.

It is not that we have any prob with the advt. we are only trying to braistorm the strategies.Just for example look at this input . Don't you think it is good enough input to continue the thread?

Also, now that Zen Estilo is round the corner with K series launch, guess this is high time that they tell the normal people (who donot follow technology like BHPians do) the benefits of this engine and the need for premium if charged by Maruti.

Good move Maruti, your K series engine is anyway reporting better FE as compared to Kappa (as reported by users on this forum itself)
..hmmmm
and yes with loads of FUN too

And as GM holds substantial share in Suzuki, i don't think Suzuki would have paid anything to GM.
GM paid FIAT to get out of the deal, not the other way round.

I had read in one of the earlier threads in Team-bhp that Maruti manufactures those engines in its Manesar plants under license from FIAT. Wikipedia's Swift page also mentions that: "In Europe, the Swift was launched in 3- or 5-door hatchback form, with 1.3 and 1.5 L petrol engines, and a 1.3 L DDiS engine supplied by Fiat."

The Indian Swift has got Suzuki DDis written on the engine cover. So I guess it's manufactured by Maruti. No manual or brochure of the Swift mentions Fiat anywhere.

The Engine is manufacutred by Fiat which is named as multijet in fiat Cars, Quadrajet in Vista and DDis in Maruti . Maruti is yet to Manufacture a diesel engine of thier own.

That is just branding , May be they paid a little bit more or less for adding a clause in license agreement that they will use their own brand name depending on weather fiat thinks that their brand enhances marketability or not.

In case of Tata - Fiat the relation is little different and Tata gains more consumer confidence by acknowledging that it is Fiat engine so they do not hide the fact despite using Quadrajet brand instead of multijet.

The major factor that is attributed to this is the Pricing of the diesel models. In swift the diesel was priced much closer to the petrol version, Even though the petrol engine belonged to older generation. Ritz with the latest petrol engine is priced much lower than the diesel. Comparison below ( all base models).

LXI: LDI : Difference : Percent
Ritz 405,872: 480,754 :74,882 :18%
Swift 422,859: 483,678 :60,819 :14%

While price is a reason, another key reason is that K series engine is very refined and fuel efficient. Maruti has the benefit of lower excise duty due to the engine being 1.2 ltr as against 1.3 Ltr in Swift, which they have passed on to the consumer

Moreover, the advantage of a petrol engine over a Diesel in India is initial price and better refinement

IIRC, Suzuki manufactures the small diesel engine in India under license from Fiat. Fiat demanded a huge amount for license and Suzuki payed the amount to manufacture the 1248cc engine in India. Hence they are able to cost effectively put in the the small car range.

There was an article in ACI about this where they also mentioned that Tata-Fiat went to Suzuki in India to get those engines. Suzuki refused. Also there was mention of another small two cylinder/three cylinder diesel from Fiat. Fiat was in crash crunch so they sold the engine tech. Fiat also said that the next generation of engines called Multiair will not be sold to any manufacturer.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Petrol To Get K-Series

Swift Petrol

Maruti Suzuki will replace the old and poor G13B engine and the Ritz K-Series engine will be matted to the Swift.

Maruti Suzuki K-Series engine does the job in two ways, one through
better mileage and latter with lesser duties. The Indian Government gives excise benefits to petrol cars having engine capacity less than 1200cc. So that will amount to 4% excise duty reduction on the Swift petrol, the Swift diesel already gets this benefit

Cars in India mostly got sold on the following aspects - eye catching design, aesthetics appeal, mileage, neighbors envy owner pride, price and finally the engine. Most people (I am not counting the enthusiasts here) never bothered much when it came to what went inside the hood. This can also be attributed to the fact that the engines were generally tried & tested in the overseas markets.
However when new (Kappa) engine from the Hyundai stable made its debut the focus had to be shifted on to the engine. Reason was not far to see, the i10 was already existing in the market & advertising the 'car' again made no sense. Thus the advertising campaign was to make people aware that there was a new kid on the block which basically looked same, but had an all new heart.
Fast forward to the new Maruti Swift now. The car has been in existence since quite a few years now. Now when Maruti must have decided to plonk the 1.2 K-Series engine it would not have made much sense to advertise the Swift as a new car. So the best thing to do is to advertise the engine itself & then quietly slip it into the Swift without much fanfare. Also simply advertising the engine helps them to talk about 2-3 models at the same time.
This is purely my insight...

Maruti is looking to promote the K-series range as the all-new, fuel efficient and refined engine lineup.

Let us keep in mind that the Swift petrol was derived from the old carburetted esteem engine which was given the MPFI update.

The introduction of the K-series engines has given MSIL an opportunity to not only highlight its technical superiority, but also to promote it as an additional incentive to buy a Maruti.

So the engine upgrade was already overdue for Swift (petrol) by nearly 5 years .

MSIL has been taking consumers for a ride all along happily by give oudated heart to hearty car.
Better late than never ! Please MSIL stop giving your customers a short change

cheers
