Cars catching fire

I read this online today BMW catches fire in Ahmedabad; four die and wondered under what circumstances will a car catch fire.

In this case the BMW hit a trailer and the central locking system would not open Further BMW officials say they never heard of BMW going in flames like this.

No amount of safety (maybe having fire extinguishers) can help those trapped inside. Why would a car catch fire? How can this be prevented? What should one do if the car catches fire?

@ mods: I am not sure if this topic has been discussed before (not to my knowledge). If so request merge.
