I agree. . Such problems can occur anywhere. If the concerned autorities are not taking steps even after it is reported, then it is something to sensationalise.

If they don't fix the problem, it has to be taken further

I think all these news channels are making us more sensationalist

Maruti used to send reminders about service (based on avg. usage), insurance
renewal etc. Then my car details got automatically flushed out! Nothing
since then. When I signed up, actually expected them to develop the site
over time to make it more useful. Did not happen! Now this potential identity
theft issue!

If you'd read my post more carefully, I did mention that I'd reported the
problem to Maruti over phone, --- didn't feel the need to send an email too. I
posted several days after calling them, when the "change password" feature
was still not working. Did not try to update my profile again to see if I was still
put into someone else's profile page, for obvious reasons.

Appropriate title and all that

No, I didn't hack! I refused to, remember? I could have hacked (mangled,
mutilated ...) the owner's database though, if I wished to. "Hacking"
doesn't necessarily have to mean "hacking into" something!

English is a powerful language, affording multiple ways of expressing
something. Someone's particular choice everyone else may not necessarily
subscribe to. I must admit that I certainly had not anticipated the confusion my
original title ("I refused Maruti's invitation to hack their online owners' database!)
has created, so that some even thought that the title was completely
inappropriate. I'm sorry for that. But was it really so wild?
If you leave your door unlocked, it is an "invitation" to steal, even without
a formal letter of invitation! Although, you may just as well say that
your "door was unlocked".

Thanks for your suggestion for the new title. Though, if one really wants
to nitpick, one could as well argue that Maruti's online database hasn't
really "mixed up customer details", since my updated profile is still there
quite in its unmixed glory, as was apparently the profile of the owner on
whose page I was put!

--- No offence intended .
