The surprising thing is inspite of the build quality and interior quality issues, Maruti continues to hit the right tone amongst the Indian masses, and is always top of the pile here! Now why would they invest in making their cars better if they are doing as well as they are and there is no sign of slowing down!

How is the drivability of Swift 1.2/Ritz 1.2 when compared against i10 1.2?
I have heard the i10 has a tough time in slow traffic with frequent downshifts. Is it any better in Swift 1.2/Ritz 1.2?

The Ritz beats the i10 1.2 hands down when it comes to drivability. The i10 can't hold a candle to the Ritz w.r.t to the engine and gearbox. The K12M is pure automotive nirvana as far as small capacity motors in India are concerned. That ad about the Kappa engine giving better mileage than the 1.1 irde is pure marketing hogwash. The 1.1 is easier to drive in the city while the 1.2 is better suited for the highway. But both these can't come anywhere near the K12M motor of the Ritz.

well ya a friend TD'd a swift with the K block, he says its a great car only that it becomes sluggish after the 3rd gear. But i guess thats ok for a 1.2. you cant have the best of both worlds. FE is real good he says. Very smooth revving and silent. No change in the interiors, only seat covers have changed ..lol

@longhorn - thanks for the feedback. Hope that was based on actual driving.

I Believe its not possible to be sluggish on 3rd Gear! as the K12 motor has a better torque than G13 (.3 Increase lol: ) so there will not be a problem in or from 3rd gear!. Normally a car can be sluggish in 2nd gear, when it comes to 3rd or 4th or top gear then shifting of gears plays a vital roles accordinig to the RPM. Almost 70% of the people will try to take the car in 2nd gear @ 1500 RPM not everyone shifts the gear to 1st unless the car and motor is really sluggish :Frustrati

Not to sure, havent driven the car myself. The friend is a car reviewer and works in the auto indus.

Well, technically its a free market and nobody can force Maruti's hand. As a matter of fact even if they increase the price of swift by 10 L, there's nothing much we can do (of course, its quite obvious there will be no takers of Swift at that price). In fact Fiat 500 & The Bug are at 15-20L price point.

But yes, Maruti should have passed on the 12% they have saved to the customer. Dont like it? - dont buy it :)

Competition?

Except from Swift/DeZire - they didnt have a single car which found mass acceptance in last 5 years. A Star & Estilo are flops, and Ritz D is going with discounts. With Figo, Beat and and newer Micra would put pressure on the hatch segment which's Maruti's bread and butter. On top of that add the huge success of i10 as a better quality car.

Maruti has only put a sticker price on the Swift 1.2k.
It's YOU who will decide what the final/street price will be.
Its always the market forces that decide the final selling price of any product.

BTW, Maruti is not required to pass on the 12% savings to anybody. Let's not start on ethics here .. ;)

"Emissions have always been one of the worst nightmares of auto-manufacturers and with BS-IV emissions homing in, it was time to head back to the drawing boards once again. Maruti Suzuki however had a pretty easy solution to tackle the problem. With their entire line-up already BS-IV ready, it was only the best selling Swift range that needed to be brought upto speed.

Instead of tinkering with the current G13B engines, Maruti Suzuki went ahead and plonked in the scrumptious K12M unit from the Ritz. Now many might think of this as a downgrade from a 1.3 litre engine to a 1.2, but when you look at the amount of technology that?s infused into the K12M unit, the G13B feels plain dated. Power output is down by 3 PS at 85 PS while torque remains the same at a 113 Nm.

However, the driving characteristics have been changed drastically. While both the Swift and the D'zire were extremely fun to drive cars, the new engine has inculcated a fresh lease of life into both the cars. The first thing that you notice when you fire up the engine is the new found refinement. NVH levels have been considerably worked upon with no vibes whatsoever even at high rpm's. From what we drove of it, outright performance seems to be quicker than the old car and mileage figures seems to have gone up as well. The suspension has also received minor tweaks giving the car a fine balance between ride and handling. The gear ratios are very well matched making city driving a breeze. On the highways though, overtaking long trailers needs downshifts and planning. But once in the powerband, the car simply surges ahead. At the moment Maruti Suzuki seems to have made its success story even better. Watch out for a full blown review coming up soon!"

Drove the K12M equipped Swift last Saturday. Though 2 Bhp lesser than the outgoing G13, it felt a lot more agile. Seemed to work really well in the 4-5k RPM powerband. Also, its over-square, right?

How's the low end response - good for city driving ?

^^ Expect the same as Ritz. When the engine changes, the new gear box comes for free with it. But running it around would certainly have a different feel as swift has a better chassis. And yes, this K block engine has low end torque unlike the previous engine.

Looks good...cant wait for a TD of the K block

Yes, its over-square unit.
K12M Bore X Stroke = 73 mm X 71.5 mm.
And the engine is lighter than G13.

Can you tell us about the build quality problem ? The interior fit and finish issue does exist though since long I am yet to come across such issue. Let say that interior fit and finish issue is there, so what is build quality issue exactly ? Where did you find the car to be wrong ? Or its just the feel ?

1) Correct. This is a free market, nobody forces anyone to buy a particular thing. OT, but but I really wish government made some rules for availability of spare parts for older cars and starts OTC sales of spares.

2) i10 just has better interior quality and nothing else IMHO. Be it ride quality or handling, there is nothing special about i10. The motors are very unexciting, not adding to driving pleasure at any point of time. The 1.1 i10 is better than 1.2 i10 for city driving. Swift has an advantage when it comes to ride, handling and driving pleasure.

But may be its just me. Others' priority can be different. One thing is for sure that competition is catching up and i10 has met with great success, which has stunned Maruti.
