The Autocar Performance Show 2009 began yesterday on the 19th of November '09 at the MMRDA grounds at Bandra Kurla Complex Mumbai. A annual affair, many a car enthusiast visit the show to catch their favourite cars and bikes which are on display . This year's show will go on till 22nd November. Team BHP gives you a low down on what is HOT and what is NOT at the show.

One of the star attractions of the show, the JCB Diesel Max, which is the world's fastest diesel powered car. This car will be on display for two days only i.e the 19th and the 20th.




JCB are makers of Diggers, Loaders and other Earth Moving vehicles. But this car is entirely different from what JCB usually do. The Diesel Max is an engineering marvel and its achievements speak for itself.

The JCB Diesel Max is powered by two engines belting out 750hp each. One engine is mounted at the front of the car while other is at the rear. It is interesting to note that both the engines are mounted horizontally and not vertically.

The landspeed tests for the Diesel Max were carried out at the Bonneville Salt Flats at Utah in the U.S.A in 2006. This car holds two records: One done by the Southern California Timing Association(SCTA) and the other by the FIA ( See pic below)



The test is carried out over a distance of 11 miles but timings are recorded only between the 5th and the 6th mile. The record timings as shown by the yellow arrow are calculated by taking an average of how long the car takes to cover 11 miles and back but as I mentioned before only timings between the 5th and 6th mile (to and fro) are used to get the average timing.

The timings pointed out by the red arrow are just actual one way timings to show what speeds this car is capable of. (again 5th and 6th mile only)

The chutes which assist the car to come to a halt



Views of the cockpit and the steering wheel. The steering is similar to that of an F1 car and even has paddle shifters. The two green buttons are used to activate the parachutes.

The Jaguar XKR Convertible is by far the best car at the show IMO. Its so beautiful even the Gallardo will take a back seat for me. Giving the Leaping Cat company is a Range Rover "Autobiography" version.

Italian Supercar maker Lamborghini had one LP560 Gallardo on display. Looks like this one came straight from the track in Chennai

It was already exciting when the news of Cosworth setting up shop in India was announced and this time Cosworth is making it presence felt at the ACI show. Cosworth has big plans from India. For now they are looking manufacturing air filters, exhaust systems and other works in India. Engines will be imported from the UK and landed cost for a 200 bhp engine will be approximately 6.5 lakhs. 2 years from now Cosworth will be looking to manufacture basic engines and offer them at a price of 50,000/- One can then go on to upgrade that engine for performance.

The Super car gallery is a downer this year with nothing really exclusive on display . There is just a GTR( from last year), a Porsche 911 Carrera and a BMW Z4 which is not really a super car

Dilip Chhabria Design or DC Design as it is popularly known is showcasing two new products at the ACI Show

First is the DC Lounge a customized vehicle based on the Toyota Innova. Cost? 4.95 lakhs + taxes over and above the cost of a stock Innova

Also on display is a Nano with a body . Comes with aftermarket alloys with a four bolt set up. Kit cost - Rs.80,000/-. Side looks good. The front and rear look bulky. High quality paint job though.

The biggest attraction at the Skoda stall is the Laura RS. This LHD 'Octavia' as its known abroad has been brought down just for the show. I liked the yellow paint job and 200 BHP sounds yummy. Skoda are still not revealing anything on plans of launching it in India yet.

AMG fans are in for a disappointment as there is no exotica at the Mercedes stand this year. Instead there is an M Class, a blood red kitted C Class and the new W212 E Class.

Chevrolet is displaying is recently launched Cruze at the ACI show while sharing stall space with the Captiva.








Hyundai are displaying their current lineup consisting of the i10, the Verna and the i20





Premier has a stall this year where they are showcasing their compact SUV, the Rio

Toyota is displaying the Big Daddy Landcruiser which is priced at a crore of rupees. Alongside is the new Camry and ever so popular Fortuner

The other Japnese Giant Honda is displaying is range of models the Civic, City, Jazz and the CRV. No Accord though.

Nothing special on the Ford stand. The new Endeavour is on display along with the Fiesta saloon






Fiat is displaying the cute 500 and a Punto both red. A Ferrari in the centre would have been nice :D

There is a Mahindra customized Xylo on display at the Mahindra stall. Comes with an exterior kit, new tail lights and interiors as well. Costs approx 3.5 lakhs.
