Here are the prices of both at Cochin(Metallic) :

MARUTI SWIFT ZXI - 5,17,136

RITZ ZXI BS IV - 4,81,913

Price Difference : 35,223

I'm wondering why such a price difference although Ritz Petrol is a new model with a class apart K-Series engine, better interiors, BS-IV compliant engine etc. and also Ritz Petrol sells better than Swift Petrol. Also, the features list in Lxi/Vxi/Zxi is almost similar between the two. The only plus points of Swift Petrol is the styling + handling and an additional 2 PS and Swift is 1.3L, but that's not a matter of concern in real-time driving conditions. :Frustrati

So, why the price difference although Maruti has positioned the Ritz in the same segment as of Swift even-though it may be catering to a different audience(family vs. sporty/young blood) ?

Obviously some thoughts are:

1. MUL likes to give a Customer "More" for less money
2. Style and branding costs more [The way swift was marketed, the Ritz isnt]
3. The Metal / Engineering content is not exactly the same, is it?
4. After all, its only 35K and not 2 lakhs more.
5. All cars are not equal
and
6. MUL likes to con Customers. [pun intended]

Swift has auto climate control. Another reason may be the marketing division wants the swift to be perceived more up-market and it is proven.

Well The biggest reason is that Swift has a 1.3 L engine and Ritz has a 1.2L engine. As per the definition of small car by GOI, the car has to be less than 4m and have an engine capacity 1.2L or less (1.5 for Diesel).

Because of using an engine which is almost a generation old, Swift Petrol suffers more excise duty (12% vs 24%) and hence is costly than Ritz.

The price difference is justified because:
1) Ritz has a 1.2 engine whereas Swift has a 1.3 engine (excise duty).
2) Swift ZXi has climate control.
3) Ritz is priced similar to i10 (LXi ~ Magna, VXi ~ Sportz, ZXi ~ Asta).

Its called "milk them when you can"rl:

Swift vs Ritz
  1. engine 1.3 liter vs 1.2 liter - the 1.3 liter unit is more expensive
  2. the excise duty factor also plays in favour of the Ritz
  3. Swift ZXI has Climate Control(Humidity plus temperature control)while Ritz ZXi has only Humidity Control(manual AC)

the biggest difference is the engine capacity and climate control!
oh how i wished they added climate control in the ritz :D

1. But the 1.2 Ritz P is more responsive.

2. Ok, I admit it. But still the 1.3 engine is a waste of money since the K-Series is more refined.

3. But, even in the Vxi there is near to 17K difference !

Even in Vxi it is the 1.2 Vs 1.3 engine (Excise duty benefit) difference:D

Considering Ritz as new Wagon-R, (former replaced the later in other markets) I feel Ritz should have been placed quiet lower than Swift, even the base variant.

It may have newer petrol engine and build slightly better then Swift but IMO it is not in the same segment as Swift.

In no way does Ritz sell more than the Swift.

Infact, Ritz is not really a popular car from the MUL stable mainly because of the looks.

The Rs 35K is because of the difference in engine specs.

Techlology obviously plays a major role here;the K12M is a much more refined unit. If I were given a choice,I will choose a K Series purely because it is technologically superior

However, there is no denying the fact that the All Aluminium G13B can be called the Engine Of India - one of the finest the country has ever seen.It soldiered on from 1993(the smaller 1 liter version in the Zen) to date(in the Esteem,Gypsy King,Versa,Swift and DZire) and has won acclaim for its responsive nature.

As far as I recall, the Govt norm is <4 mtr with max engine capacity of 1.3L in petrol & 1.5L in diesel. Swift petrol engine is 1298CC, so it will qualify for the same. Please correct if I am wrong.

What's the reason behind that ?

Even in it's site, it's positioned as a premium hatch(like Swift but not like Jazz/i20).

Ritz P is selling more than Swift P. The total sales will be a little less since Ritz is a new model & also in India the car with the best Diesel will always have a slight edge in sales.
