Team-BHP - VW to bring in its TSi & CRDI engines EDIT: Now launched

I was there at the VW showroom today to take a testdrive of the new Polo. I was informed by a sales executive that they are not taking any bookings for the JETTA or the PASSAT since the Jetta is getting a new CRDI engine and the PASSAT is going to get the 1.8TSI and they are yet to recieve any details about the engine on the JETTA.

Makes sense. Both cars are sales disasters, so VW will logically try to diversify the engine lineups and revise pricing. A Jetta Diesel at Corolla/ Civic pricing will sell. Not an anemic 100PS Petrol engine.

Same goes for the Passat - why buy one when you can get a 320d for the same price?

Totally agree with this. Dont really care about the diesel engine, but its sad to see the Jetta try to get along with a 100bhp engine. And the 1.8TSI is just screaming for DSG to be mated to it.

Perhaps its time they just brought out a new Jetta. After all, this one is based on the previous generation Golf.

i forgot to mention, it seems like VW has discontinued its DSG gearbox on all its models. Even the Passat 1.8TSI will be available only with a manual gearbox and its expected to be cheaper by atleast 7L than the current diesel passat.

vikramv007, are you trying to say VW will only sell manual models? Do clarify as I do not suppose they will get rid of the DSG. Maybe the petrols might come in manual only to get to a lower price point but I do not believe they will not have DSG at all.

7L :O If your source can be trusted, then good news. I would say effect of 320d corporate edition. Let all these cascade down till entry level sedans.

If so, wouldn't the Passat TSi and the Jetta Crdi have similar ex-showroom prices?

This is strange, though even I have heard and posted that Crdi is expected in the Jetta. This Friday my local dealer offered me a mere 10K off on a Jetta Comfortline. He has at least 6 of these standing in his yard. If the change was so imminent I am sure he would have offered a better deal to clear out the stocks. Did your dealer give any time frame for the new engine launch. I am also wondering whether the face lifted Jetta is coming in and if the Passat prices are headed south as the Passat CC may also be heading this way.

If the Jetta gets the 1.8 TSI with a DSG, I wonder if it will hurt the Superb 1.8 TSI sales? Or for that matter the Passat.

My view is that the Jetta will definitely get the CRDi as VW has no choice due to environmental compulsions, etc. Moreover, Jetta with the PD is not really selling as buyers want to wait for the CRDi or go in for something else.

Which CRDi is the Jetta going to get? Surely not the one in the twice as expensive Passat?

About the 1.8 TSI, fantastic! It was a strange situation to have parent VW slug it out with a 1.6 100 BHP engine, while Skoda got the 1.8 TSI for its Laura. About time I say! The 1.8 is an absolute stonker of an engine. Skoda sells the 1.8 TSI in only a base variant; I see an opportunity for VW to offer a better trim level in the 1.8 TSI Jetta. Of course, it wont burn the charts (European = Diesels for our market), but can be an important differentiator nevertheless.

Or a Superb from its sister concern for 5 lakhs less. A car that's superior in nearly each way.

The Passat recently got an engine upgrade (to a common rail diesel). Why would they stop accepting books for the car then? Petrol is anyways a niche market.
