How often do you pay vehicle tax?

Does the vehicle tax payment frequency rule vary among states?

In West Bengal govt. demands car tax for 5 years at one go.
Though somebody told me that it is possible to pay tax yearly which people are not aware of.

What's the rule in other states?

In AP & Karnataka you have to pay for 15 years. I paid for 15 years in AP and shifted a year later to Bangalore and again paid for 14 years in Karnataka.

out here in mumbai, it's a lifetime tax ;of the owner's or the vehicle's, is unclear... but there are places that offer annual taxes too- daman in gujarat, for instance. but i don't suppose all union territories have that facility...

same with Hyderabad, life tax at one go!

I remember, when i was in Australia, there the taxing is very apt IMHO..

whatever car u own, from the cheapest to the ferraris n bentlys, the Tax is only AUD$500! they believe that even the cheapest car use the luxury car ppl enjoy, and the luxury car ppl enjoy the same privileges the cheaper car ppl enjoy, so same tax to everyone! and i think thats the fairest thing to be done!

So, the problem seems same everywhere. But where you pay tax for 10-15 years, please enquire if there is any provision of yearly tax payment. In West Bengal also, the govt. says 5-year tax, but I did pay 1-year tax last week. There are some hidden provisions which people are unaware of. So, in your states also, it may happen to be the same case.

The Financial Express has reported that the central government is planning to make vehicle tax norms uniform across the country. The story is here.

In Kerala, new cars (I don't remember from which year) need to pay life tax at the time of registration. I paid life tax for my Alto which was bought 2 years back.

But my dad never paid life tax for his '1996 Maruti 800'. Initially he used to pay yearly tax - but after some years, a government which was hardly two or three months into the election decided that all car owners need to pay bi-yearly tax (Most private cars had to renew the tax in December those days, so this was a tactic to collect more tax just before exiting. The new Govt after the election levied 'surcharge' for the old tax paid to the previous govt, so car owners bore the brunt, as always). After this incident, the bi-yearly tax became the norm.

As far as I know, you can apply for a refund from AP by producing the new tax paid documents (Karnataka)

Its a one time tax in Mumbai/Thane. Not for the owner but for the vehicle. Its roughly about 7% of the Invoice value in Thane and IMO the highest in Maharashtra (or maybe in India). Pls correct me if I am wrong.
