The profile seems the same.

The headlight does not gel with the car.

Honestly, the new look Safari does not appeal too much!

Seems more like the facelifted Safari, but can't understand why it should co-exist with the present gen Safari.

So,then we have three SUVs, present Safari, this FL Safari Merlin and the next gen Safari based on X2 platform.

Can somebody in the Forum clarify this, 3 Safaris coexisting in the same SUV space sounds ridiculous as it might cannibalize each other in sales even though in different price brackets. Also the first two may not be good enough for international markets(read western) as the original design is dated. My sources suggest that the Safari 18 is not an all new Safari but a transplant on the X2 platform and 'NOT THE 207 PLATFORM' which probably would have taken 36 months for Tatas. As for an all new SUV on the X 2 , there is no confirmation that it is on the drawing board yet.

Safari18 is a facelift of current-gen Safari. IMHO, Tata plans to shelve GX and VX variant from current-gen Safari and replace it with Safari 18.

Safari 18 will be launched in Jan end - Feb beginning. It will have same platform and engine. Gearbox will be tuned. Exteriors will be tweaked. Interiors pretty much overhauled. Spare wheel under the body.

AS OF NOW, There is NO (Yes, it breaks everyone's heart :Frustrati) new-gen Safari. TML will focus on spurring sales of UV segment only with ARIA and Safari18. One logic behind this decision is impending localisation and assembly of LR products in India which will bring down their cost considerably.

So, as per your post, we'll have

Existing Safari Lx @ 7.75 Lacs

Safari Merlin @ 9 - 12 Lacs

Aria > 13 Lacs

Now, TATA should bring a Safari Lx - 4x4 @ 8.75 Lacs!

the LX will come with zero safety features - no abs and no airbags. when will indian manufacturers wake up to the need for basic safety equipment such as ABS? I hope and pray that Tata puts in ABS atleast into the LX if they are shelfing the GX. oh! and make LX 4x4 an option! :)

+2 :). Now that the vehicles share more and more common parts TML should make essentials like airbags, ABS, AWD, etc. optional across all variants.

Just make fundamentally well engineered vehicles, even if they are barebones but then make all the bells and whistles optional.

Not to forget, there will also be SAFARI EX.

The X2 platform based SUV will cost atleast as much as Aria.

Why is that? Do you have the details of X2 platform?

What Tata really needs to compete with the likes of Scorpio is a small SUV, something in the CRV mould, built on the manza platform. It's time to revive the Sierra brand. What say folks?

Without the spare wheel at the back, it would look like Sumo Grande's cousin. :Frustrati

Sierra.. Ah, the first love . Sierra should have been continued by introducing timely refinements, variants and improvements. I still crave for the chance to drive one of the running Sierra my uncle owns and its still doing duty in Sakleshpura estates. Pretty rugged.
Words like 'handling', 'interiors', 'slick gears', 'silent engine' etc doesn't go well with Sierra. lol:

TATA - You need to get a fitting product rolled out for competing with Scorpio. Safari hasn't been able to do that. :Frustrati

Tata should get Seirra with 2.2 L Dicor engine with 4X4. Small and practical SUV :).

The manza engine bay is large enough for a 2.0 L class engine. All they need to do is build a SUV body shell on the Manza platform and give it a 2.0 / 2.2 L engine. Petrol or Diesel - the vehicle would be a cracker.

And to hell with Jairam Ramesh

The existing Safari platform is probably sustainable in the long run for TATA mainly because of the low cost construction line factor. All it needs as a shot in the arm is weight reduction.
