Thanks everyone.
It seems that only a test drive will be able to answer any queries regarding the 'drivability' of a nano sans ps

This thread is regarding Nano upgrade. I think we are seriously diverted from topic.

Yesterday one of the TATA motors employee confirmed that TATAs are currently testing front engined NANO!clap:

What this could be?
1. Nano upgrade
2. Higher end Nano
3. Nano Europa

That's really a surprise.

I guess the Nano sales feedback and Alto's super success, triggered them that Indians want proper car. So re-inventing the Nano in regular front engine model.

It should be a Nano Europa with 3 cylinder petrol and Diesel.
Wish their R&D prototypes are getting converted to successful production models.

No offences but what price do you think a CVT and PS will put on the Nano. And say in a hypothetical situation that TATA's add the above, you'll still reject it as it would be too costly and without features.

I hate to say this but most people keep forgetting the fact that NANO was built to the cheapest car in the world. So please stop expecting the moon.

Cheers

PS: What's the price difference between the Estilo and Nano LX?

Nano as a car is not doubt the cheapest no frills car. The idea is to understand Nano as a low cost car platform. Tata can definitely add features to a car built on top of Nano and still price it competitively. Infact a Nano diesel with an AutoBox, AirBags, ABS and Alloys would find acceptance as an ideal city car and not just in Asia and Africa.
Dacia set an example by using the Logan platform for the Duster which is doing quite well in Europe.

Well if you see the Logan was built by reusing lots of parts from older models which had already been amortised. Nano on the other hand is an absolutely new model. Hence I don't think they can be compared as the developmental costs for both would be way off.

About a weeks back at Kasturinagar, Bangalore, I spotted a test mule, Nano. There were 3 people inside, and the driver stopped the vehicle for presumably a pack of cigarette, however seeing me chasing him, went back and zoomed off.

Now, I know that BOSCH has some Nanos, in Bangalore for testing the CRDi Diesel on them, and this mule looked exactly the same Diesel Nanos which have been spotted earlier, a CX, Red colour, sans the KA 53 registration.

However, from the sound of the engine, its no way feels like a diesel power plant, but in fact a more refined and powerful petrol engine, but i could be wrong. Yet, if it's the Diesel engine after all than it's really great!

Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and didn't take any pictures.stupid:

looks like bosch is developoing low cost PS for nano..

What a difference power assistance makes to Nano steering! Low-cost column mounted motor from Bosch should cost under Rs 10k

Driving Nano with electric steering developed by Bosch. Still... on Twitpic

Interesting! It will make an already nimble Nano a joy ride in the city. Now they only need to include a trunk opening - even the trunk glass opening would be fine for me :)

Nano upgrades for the 2012 model are as under:
a. front disc brakes;
b. ABS;
c. power steering;
d. left side mirror; &
...of course...
e. the diesel mill developed by Bosch.

I expect there could be few more features on the anvil, like open-able rear hatch, dash board resign for a glove box, etc.

A lot safety features added, looks like the Nano will be off to the Global marketplace in 2012.

Diesel nano will be interesting. Looking forward to it.

Are these confirmed information or just hearsay ?

Somehow am not able to fathom the Front Disc and ABS thing. ABS may come in the Nano Europa but don't see it making way to India.

^^ If the above is confirmed, it may perhaps increase the cost upto around 3.5 to 4L OTR. ABS and a diesel mill would be a certain hit. Any news about airbags and/ or an auto tranny too?

Here is the Motorbeam report which is the basis of my post:

IMO the ABS & probably dash redesign (re glove box) could be mere speculation/ wishful thinking, but others have a fair chance of making into 2012 Nano.

On Road prices in Bangalore:

Zen Estilo LX: 4,01,086
Nano LX: 2,44,599

That's a difference of 1,56,487 Rs on the on-road price in Bangalore.

Nano Diesel with PS at 50k Rs less than the price of a Zen Estilo LX will be naaiiice :D
