Off topic: Birds of the same feather!

Somewhere in the 80s while I was travelling with a Kerala friend from Coimbatore to Palghat, the Kerala State Transport bus conductor demanded that the friend pay (if I remember correctly a full adult ticket charge) for the radio cum tape that was on his lap. Of course it was a portable radio, but the new packing with the picture of the radio on it was a dead giveaway. It seems that was the rule in Kerala then! No one argues with a Kerala State Transport bus conductor.

No it isn't something new. Has been there since ages. Earlier if the cop pulled you over to check your papers they definitely checked the contents of the car.

Even on my Ikon, I was once asked to show the PUC, once it was found fine, the cop had a look at the pioneer headunit, it surely looks like an aftermarket one and demanded to see the bluebook. Thankfully my Ikon came with a factory fitted system which was later swapped and hence the audio is noted in the Bluebook.

Dont know what the fine would have been, but certainly, I would not have liked loosing the Pioneer HU.

Its not that I don't believe you, but I find this so strange.

What is a bluebook? Is it issued by manufacturer?

Audio Tax is there - Rs300 / year. And Information regarding audio is generally not mentioned in the Smart Card - the RTO generally issues a receipt for Audio Tax which is required to kept along with the Tax Token.

I had got fined sometime back near 89 cinemas crossing in byepass for having an audio system without it being mentioned in the blue book.

That crossing is one deadly one, speed guns,no plates, seatbelts.

The printing on the smart card of my i10 says:

Audio: y
Video: N

The reason sales rep says that we cannot do it later is that you have to change your smart card again to get it reflected. It is a cumbersome process.
He isn't trying to cheat you.
Around Oct'10, I have bought a Chevy Beat LT. Though I have receipt of Rs. 1500/- as Audio fee for 5 years, the same is not printed in my smart card. Can you please upload a scanned copy of relevant portion of your smart card, so that I can chase my dealer.

Thanks in advance.

The smart card should just say Audio: Y
Sorry I cannot put up the pic, as I am in US and the card is in India.

My query too! What happens if we are driving through or visiting in an out of state vehicle. Will the cops/authorities trouble/fine us for not having the audio system mentioned in the RC book?

Re: Additional registration needed for installing audio system in Kolkata?

What?????

Is this for real. I have never heard of this rule. Pardon my ignorance if it actually is a very overlooked one, but I dont recollect coming over this on any of the number of cars i have had or my father has had.

Checked all my RCs now and none of them have it.

Where is the law applicable in India?

Given that RTO is a state govt department, it seems to be a WB specific situation.

Re: Additional registration needed for installing audio system in Kolkata?

Thanks for all the responses, and a very happy 2011 to all of you!

I got the RTO receipt (RC smartcard 30-45 days away) - but for audio it IS 1520/- INR in Beltola RTO (1500 for registration and Rs 20 is for some surcharge etc). So I was not cheated on that aspect!

I would now check if my RC smart card mentions Audio as "Y" (per Blackasta)
