Indian motorsport gets national federation recognition Motorsports in India have often been victimized to the step-motherly treatment of the administration. However, backed by private sector investment and the support of petrol heads, the recognition for motorsports in India has gradually improved. In a move that will add to the positive sentiment, the government has just added the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) to the list of sports ministry-recognized National Sports Federations (NSF).
FMSCI has been included under the others section of the NSF and will not receive any financial assistance from the government. The government’s recognition will prove to be a boost for the sports category, but may not prove to be of much help in getting India back on the F1 map - given that any international motorsport event mainly depends on its commercial backing.
FMSCI governing committee member and former Formula 3 racer Akbar Ebrahim, states that the government’s recognition can help motorsports in multiple ways, including the easier acquisition of clearances to conduct championships. Additionally, the government’s recognition could also mean greater interest from schools and colleges.
The government’s recognition of motorsports will prove to be a landmark achievement for the people and associations that have worked tirelessly towards its expansion and promotion.
