Re: Charitable Sunday Drive : The 2018 Blind Man Car Rally (Bangalore)

Let me start with a BIG Thanks to ChiragM for publishing this here.

The day this was published, I got in touch with the organisers who guided me through the registration process. I got a message with the details of the rally first followed by the payment option and finally the rules and regulations in brief.
Sine this was the first time I was entering in such an event, I registered under the Novice class. Payment was made and I got a confirmation from the organisers. Meanwhile I also asked hemanth.anand if he was interested but he had other comittments on the day and was forced to drop. The next thing on my mind was co-driver. I shot messages to some of my close ones and avinashsg showed up with a Yes. The week followed with regular updates from the organisers.

D-day, I met avinashsg and started towards the Vega City mall on the Bannerghatta road. Reaching the place, we found ourselves second in the line. Parked the car at designated spot and waited for the organisers. Soon cars started to trickle in and this lovely 1994 Fiat was parked behind our car.

The organisers arrived and we were hauled over to the other side in an amphitheater. The place was abuzz with activity soon as organisers and participants started to arrive.

That's us waiting for things to start rolling. avinashsg on the left.

Breakfast of idly/vada was followed by the issue of stickers, tee and a cap. We proceeded to stick the competition number on the car with fairly dissatisfaction. The glue on the rear seems to have very good adhesive and that was playing on my mind about the peeling off later. avinashsg came up with a brilliant idea of peeling off a small portion on both ends and pasting.

Ready with the competition number pasted

The pairing of the navigator and the driver was quick followed by the driver briefing. Half way through the talks, the chief guest, Mr. Ramalinga Reddy, member of the Legislative Council for 7 times from Jayanagar area arrived and flagged off the rally.

The driver briefing

The Marshals were from the Rajdoot 175 club who would be stationed at the various checkpoints enroute

By this time, we introduced ourselves with our navigator, Mr. Bhaskerramam who travelled all the way from Hyderabad to participate in this rally. Hats off to this gentleman for pursuing his passion. This was his sixth rally and he has travelled to Pune for one such event earlier. He has won 2 trophies for his navigation skills in these events.

We were flagged off at 1030hrs and we started to roll. Initially it was a bit confusing and a couple of hiccups, but once we got hold of it, there was no looking back. The navigation was kept one step ahead while we maneuvered through the lanes and bylanes off BG road. The next shock was at CP3 which we presumed as CP2. The marshals however informed us that the past 6 cars also did not go through the timecheck and that cooled our nerves a bit. From then onwards it was smooth flow. We did however encounter many competitors going round in circles which made it funny. And a couple of competitors going hard on the A pedal which looked dangerous.

At one of the time control points

The route taken was Vega city mall -IIMB - Bilekhalli - BTM 4th stage - Devarachikkanahalli - Akshayanagar - Around Hulimangala - Jigani road - Bommasandra - EC - BETL flyover - BTM layout - MICO layout - Vega city mall.

We reached back at 1254hrs at the venue. Lunch was ready post which our navigator bid us good-bye as he had to travel back by train. In this melee we forgot to click a photo with our navigator and repent it.

The competition returned sometime around 1445hrs after which the time penalties were being handed over. There were couple of performances on the stage to kill time.

Meanwhile we cooled off with this

The chief guest for the award ceremony, Ms. Soumya Reddy, reigning MLC for the Jayanagar area arrived at 1615 and the award function kicked off.

The awards for the Novice category was declared first and we were surprised to find ourselves at the top step of the podium.

Congratulations on the podium finish and thanks for the detailed report The Baleno looks impeccable

*Both Mr.Ramalinga Reddy (BTM Layout constituency) and his daughter Soumya Reddy (Jayanagar) are MLA'S, not MLC's. Mr. Reddy is a 7 time MLA, 4 times elected from Jayanagar and 3 times from BTM Layout and his daughter is a first time MLA.
