This does seem far-fetched, given that Bernie's already given a contract to the Jaypee Group for a few years.

Maharashtra plans to build F1 Racing Track

MUMBAI: Maharashtra government has invited bids from consultants for setting up a 'Formula 1 Racing Track' in the state.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation which has been entrusted with the job of putting up the track has invited bids from consultancy firms in this regard.

Bids are to be submitted by December 23 and may be opened on the same day, according to the tender document on the website of the corporation.

The consultants should be able to complete the work in six months, it said.

As per the tender, the consultant submitting the bid should have completed an assignment of giving consultancy services for at least one racing track, should have experience in designing race circuits or other sporting facility on a similar scale and should have knowledge of F1 Racing and other forms of Formula racing around the world.

The tender does not indicate the possible location of the racing track but according to reports it is expected to come up along the Mumbai-Pune expressway.

Perhaps, it would be wise to gauge the response to the North India F1 track before inviting tenders? Either ways, I am from MH and know how the state administration works. Don't have high hopes.

I'd much rather they focus on other more important issues and leave F1 to privateers. Period.

wastage of time and efforts from Maharashtra Government.

Even countries like Abu Dhabi, Malaysia have only ONE F1 circuit. Not sure if the tenders will open OR anything concrete will happen after that.

Not gonna happen anytime soon. Im so sure of it.

I guess they got the idea from Commonwealth Games. The amount of money politicians and officials managed to loot from the CWG coffers is staggering. Still nobody really got punished despite the scam getting such exposure. So it is a safe bet to venture into government sponsored International sports activity.

I didn't think so that there will be a F1 Race Track anytime soon in Maharashtra as first of all, track for Indian F1 GP is taking shape near New Delhi & second reason is that they have condition in tender that the consultants have to complete their work within 6 months which seems to be quiet an impossible task.

It should be an F1 capable track and should be used for all other forms of circuit racing.

Wouldn't it be great if we have a good race track in this part of the country?

Yeah right. Did you know that they were also building a Space shuttle launch platform!! :D :D

Don't know about anything about a space shuttle launch platform  but a race track is surely in the pipeline. It might not be an F1 race track as such but definitely something that will be upto international standards. It boils down to the interest shown by corporates in taking the project ahead.

This is MSRDC's official tender document for the same:

Sounds like a good initiative! But WTH just 6 months to build the track? Shows how much knowledge the people who are trying to get this done have :D

@ Above : whats the big deal in building a race track? You just need a design, some road work and some "buildings" ..Im sure you can lay a long winding road in 6 months!!

And that probably was the line of thought of the people who came out with 6month deadline!! :D

This makes sense and should be the case due to the proximity to Mumbai airport. I am just hoping the expressway will be always well maintained as a result of this initiative. Atleast till the F1 track exit or something. Besides there are other initiatives like keeping the existing roads in good condition which the government should take care of first.

Actually 6 months is not the deadline to build the track. 6 months is the deadline for the chosen consultancy firm to come up with a feasibility report on the project.

The first ever Formula 1 race in India is yet to be conducted but that does not stop Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) from planning a track in Mumbai. The corporation is looking to construct a F1 circuit on the lines of international standards and is looking for consultatnts to advise them on the developments of the same. Although MSRDC has not declared which location in Mumbai would see the F1 track, a requirement of 500 acres makes Malad, Thane and Panvel the favored locations.
Mr. Bipin Shrimali, VC and MD, MSRDC has revealed that out of three bidders, two have been shortlisted already. Once the final selection is done by the end of the month, MSRDC will commence the development of the F1 circuit which will also feature a theme park. Will FIA have two Grand Prix in India or a race in Mumbai and Delhi will alternate each year?

Pfft, that's nothing. The Maharashtra Govt will soon be inviting tenders for the construction of a suspension bridge from Juhu Beach to California.
