LEDs are history! Laser headlamps coming up

While other manufacturers are going crazy with the LED tech in their headlights, BMW finds themselves a bit bored and goes ahead to up the game by going a step further and developing laser, yes you read it right, LASER-based headlights for their future cars which and claimed to be more brighter and more energy efficient than LEDs. Bring it on, BMW!

God save those who flash at me!

LED headlights might be all the rage, but BMW is developing a new laser-based illumination system.
Considered the "next logical step" in automotive lighting, the system uses a series of laser diodes to create a beam of energy which is converted into visible light by a fluorescent phosphor material. This setup promises to deliver better illumination than traditional LED lights (170 lumens vs. 100 lumens), while being more energy efficient.
If initial development goes according to plan, laser headlights could start showing up in production vehicles within a few years.

In a few years bah :P..
Very clever tech though by the sound of it. I'm assuming that the picture is for representational purpose only

Nope, those are the actual headlights of the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept car which they have now debuted and developing this tech on

re: LEDs are history! Laser headlamps coming up

Here you go ..further news on BMW'S Laser lights!

"BMW believes that, just as halogen beget LED, LED begets laser lights. If true, laser technology will allow its cars to utilize lighting systems that are more efficient than current setups while also allowing for light patterns that are more consistent and brighter. In addition to the greater illumination possibilities, the diodes used would be significantly smaller than LED units.

The first vehicle to wear laser eyes? The new BMW i8 concept vehicle."

BMW working on frickin' laser beams for headlights

Cheers!

Will Audi beat BMW in getting Laser headlights to production cars?

In this week's CES 2014, Audi showed the Laser Light concept car, the Audi Sport Quattro and Audi CEO, Stadler, announced that the production vehicle will be equipped with Laser lamps for high beam.

Quote:
The Sport Quattro Laser Light uses two trapezoidal headlamp elements per side.
The outer ring comprises a matrix of LED low beams with an aperture mask while the inner segment uses laser diodes to generate the laser light. Audi says the laser beams can reach 1,640 feet (500 meters) or a third of a mile.

Audi says that’s twice the range and three times the lumosity (brightness) of LED beam headlamps.
This announcement from Audi has just 'lighted up' the race to establish whether it will be Audi, or BMW to get this new technology to production first.
Though Audi was the first to get a prototype on laser in a concept, the A2 rear lamps, earlier BMW had announced that its i8 production version will have Laser headlights as an optional equipment.

The game changers;

Re: LEDs are history! Laser headlamps coming up

Can't they do some serious work like Tesla in bringing mainstream electrical cars or some such responsible work with a sense of urgency instead of LED vs Laser nonsense?

Re: LEDs are history! Laser headlamps coming up

The research focus on auto lighting is no less important if not more, imho.
Lack of proper lighting has always been the top contributor for accidents at night with each geographical areas having their own associated problems.
Those who are frantically searching for improving their headlight's efficiency would agree as each meter visibility gained is an immensely useful in practical scenario.

Take a look at this amazing highlights of BMW’s New Iconic Laser Lights;
  • Consumes 30 percent less energy
  • Parallel light beam is ten times more intense than that produced by halogen, xenon or LED light sources
  • BMW laser lighting has a beam range of up to 600 metres
  • The camera-based BMW Selective Beam system, which is controlled by dynamic actuators prevents oncoming or preceding vehicles being dazzled and allows the laser high beam to be left on at all times
  • Provides Night Vision system’s Dynamic Light Spot functionality which can detect people and animals in pitch black condition from upto 100 metres, by infrared camera.
Last but not least, look at that stance!
